Four hits the world
Looks like the positioning of this summer's comicbook movies early in the season has paid off both domestically and overseas. "Fantastic Four" pulled in an additional $6.8 million in its fourth weekend of release, bringing its domestic total to $136 million. It's also doing well overseas, where it pulled in $24 million in 38 debut markets, bringing its foreign b.o. total to just under $80 million. While "Batman Begins" disappointed somewhat in overseas markets, the pic's still doing really well compared to recent action entries "The Island" and "Stealth," both of which had less than spectacular debuts.
STANDOFF AVERTED: Wizard prexy Gareb Shamus has confirmed in an interview with the Comic Geek Speak podcast that there will be no WizardWorld show in Atlanta in 2006, though there may be one the following year. This came after apparently tentative dates for an Atlanta show that conflicted with those set for the long-running HeroesCon drew a lot of flak from fans and pros who threw their support behind HeroesCon. WizardWorld's largest show gets underway in Chicago with a preview night this Thursday. Organizers say in a press release they expect 58,000 fans to show up.
BY THE NUMBERS: Comic-Con Intl. San Diego reports attendance of 105,000 attendees and exhibitors, the first time the show has drawn a six-figure crowd. Meanwhile, Con spokesman David Glanzer tells Tom Spurgeon that the show plans to stay in San Diego despite the resurfacing of the long-running rumor that the show would move to Anaheim.
THE BOOK ON JACK: Mark Evanier reports that he's in the home stretch of his long-awaited biography of Jack Kirby. Evanier was a onetime assistant to and lifelong friend to Kirby and his family.
SKYLINE 'GUARDIAN': The New York Times took a look at, of all things, the architecture drawn in Grant Morrison and Cameron Stewart's "Manhattan Guardian" miniseries, part of Morrison's "Seven Soldiers" megaproject.
PAUL SPEAKS: ICV2.com has a three-part interview with DC prexy Paul Levitz.
NEW BOOKS: A couple of high-profile creators have announced new projects, with Grant Morrison and Jim Lee reteaming to revive Lee's original Image/Wildstorm title "Wildcats," and Warren Ellis will team with artist Stuart Immonen on "NextWave" for Marvel.
