Samurai, Wizards and Hulks
Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to topline and co-produce a live-action feature and animated TV show based on manga series "Afrosamurai," created by Takashi Okazaki. Pic is slated for a 2006 start and 2007 release; TV version set to air on cabler Spike TV.
WizardWorld Chicago, the largest show on the company's "tour" of comics shows, opens tonight at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill. Wizard founder Gareb Shamus was profiled in the New York Times in advance of the show, which should see plenty of comics biz annoucements. It appears that as San Diego grows in size from merely huge to impossibly mammoth that Marvel and DC prefer to announce their new series and signings at shows like WizardWorld, where they'll get more attention from fans.
Vivendi Universal Games is hoping fans will be tempted to preorder the upcoming "Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction" videogame by throwing in a special edition reprint of 1962's Hulk #1 comic. The special edition comicbook will feature a new cover by Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts and is only available to preorders. The game ships Aug. 28 and details on the offer can be found at www.hulkgames.com. The Hulk game is the first of three high-profile games based on Marvel characters to hit in the next few weeks, with Activision's "Ultimate Spider-Man" and "X-Men Legends II: The Rise of Apocalypse" both hitting shelves in September. Comics scribes Paul Jenkins and Brian Michael Bendis contributed in various ways to the Hulk and Spidey games, respectively.
Speaking of Bendis, he's finally made it official by signing an exclusive contract with Marvel. The press release from Marvel gives no indication of how long the deal is for.
Christian magazine The World visited Comic-Con last month and brings an interesting point of view to its coverage.
Teen cable channel Encore Wam will air the winning entry in its superhero video contest tomorrow night at 7:45 p.m. (ET/PT) and again at 10 p.m. (ET/PT). The entry was made by 17-year-old Adam Witt of Centennial, Colo. The airing will be part of the cabler's Night of Heroes, which includes airings of comics pics "Hellboy," "Steel" and a behind-the-scenes look at Comic-Con.
