Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #1
Creators: Damon Lindelof, writer; Leinil Francis Yu, artist
Marvel, 32 pages, color, $2.99
So? The most recent TV writer to beat a path to the comics world is “Lost” co-creator and former “Crossing Jordan” scribe Damon Lindelof, who pits the claw-wielding Canadian against the green goliath in the first of six issues of battle and mayhem. It’s hard to imagine how the story is going to top the sheer gore and fanboy fascination of the first three pages of this debut issue (you’ll have to read it to find out what I’m talking about). One of the things few writers get right about Wolverine is the Indiana Jones persona that was foisted on him sometime in the late 1980s. Lindelof, thankfully, manages to pull off that aspect better than just about any writer I can think of, giving this first issue enough of a storytelling jolt to make it possible that the next five issues will be more than just a series of brawls. Yu has long been an underrated artist, never seeming to find quite the right writing partner for his gritty style. But this issue flows naturally and bodes well for the series being more than a typical superhero fight comic. Grade: B+

Can I just say that the 2-page Marvel "Ultimates" advertising spread in the current issue of Wizard ruined the surprise of the first 3-pages. It also motivated me to buy the book the day it came out so i can't complain too much.
Kudos to Lindelof!

I've never even seen "Lost," and most of these Hollywood types seem to be more fluff than substance (storywise), but this initial issue was really enjoyable. He seems like a seasoned veteran.

Hi,
I'm a reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer writing a Sunday piece on novelists and TV writers penning comics. I want to hear from fans: Does the recruiting of these name writers (Orson Scott Card, Reggie Hudlin et al) excite or dismay you? Verdicts on their work?
Please respond to dhiltbrand@phillynews.com or call me 215 854 4875 asap.
Thanks.
