Batman/The Spirit #1
Batman/The Spirit #1
Creators: Jeph Loeb and Darwyn Cooke
DC Comics, 48 pages, color, $4.99
So? A pair of classic crimefighters come together in a team-up that seems mostly intended to jump-start interest in Cooke’s soon-to-debut monthly Spirit series. This is a great nostalgia trip back to the days of the 1940s, when Batman’s tales were atmospheric entries into the underworld and Will Eisner was pushing the limits of the medium with the stylish newspaper strip The Spirit. Cooke is the ideal artist to bring these worlds together, bringing his affection for the aesthetic of the day and talent for modern storytelling to full bear on the proceedings. While not a deep exercise by any means, this is a fun flashback and decent re-introduction of Eisner’s character. Grade: B

I think Tom was on the money with this review. I used to read The Spirit back when I was a kid (about 8 years old), the same year I started reading Batman (we're talking several decades ago here). This was a fun story, not deep, but a very enjoyable read. I've been reading some of the DC collections of The Spirit and rediscovering one of my early comics heroes, and now I can look forward to the new incarnation.
