DC Comics' announced a new weekly series, called Countdown, will succeed 52. The series will launch May 9 with Countdown #51, with the issue number dwindling each week to end with Countdown #0 in 2008. Heading up the project is veteran TV writer Paul Dini, who will serve as head writer for the series. The series will be created by a writing staff working under Dini's direction, much the same way a TV writing staff does. Dini, of course, worked on the beloved 1990s skein Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited and Lost. He is currently writing Detective Comics. The story will, like 52, provide the throughline for the DCU for 2007-2008. Expect major roles to be played by Jimmy Olsen, former Wonder Girl Donna Troy, Mary Marvel, former Atom Ray Palmer and Darkseid.
Meanwhile, legendary artist Neal Adams confirmed he's drawing a new Batman story called Batman: Odyssey that Frank Miller has agreed to dialogue.
DC also announced a three-issue Captain Carrot and the Zoo Crew series, to be written by Bongo Comics impressario Bill Morrison. In other DC news, artist Jim Lee said at the MySpace.com mystery panel that he’s finished All-Star Batman #5 and working on #6. Delays on Wonder Woman have prompted DC to rejigger the current story written by Grey’s Anatomy producer Allan Heinberg. That story, originally set to end in Wonder Woman #5, will now finish in a special issue to be scheduled later. A new #5 will ship in its stead, followed by the comics debut of novelist Jodi Picoult in #6.
