Cartoon Overlord at ACME Comedy Theater

It's been a while since I've been able to check out ACME Comedy Theater, the comics-friendly improv outfit run by Travis Oates over on La Brea. But comics and animation fans should check out the current Sunday night show, the improv-animation combo Cartoon Overlord.

Yes, that's right, improv animation, creating using both artwork created by local cartoonists and by the crowd. Audience members can download a template for creating characters and settings at the website or at the show. The artwork is animated by a cast of ACME improv actors who provide live voices and use a proprietary videogame engine to control what's on screen with game controllers.

The show, which opened March 18 and runs through May 27, is run by Joseph Limbaugh and uses comic art from Comic Strip Network. Tickets cost $10 if you submit art and $12 if you don't. More info on the show and ACME at their respective sites.
