Art Directors Guild

Art Directors Guild Brings Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film Production Designers to Comic-Con for the First Time On July 27

In an event organized by the Art Directors Guild, fans attending Comic-Con this year in San Diego will for the first time be able to interact with Production Designers who are masters of design for sci-fi/fantasy films. Production Designers bring to life the physical look of movies and TV shows that are genres from the Comic-Con world. A panel of leading film Production Designers will be answering questions and revealing how they create other worlds and environments on Friday, July 27, (Room 30AB, Convention Center, 3:30-5:00pm).

They include Alex McDowell, who is flying in for the event from Vancouver where he is in pre-production on the much-anticipated "Watchmen," based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. His past credits include "Minority Report," "The Terminal" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Ruth Ammon, who is the production designer on the hit NBC-TV series "Heroes," has also worked on "Without a Trace" and numerous other movies and television shows.

James D. Bissell was Production Designer on the recent "300" from Warner Bros. "The Spiderwick Chronicles" is currently in post-production. His work on the 2005 "Good Night, and Good Luck" received an Oscar® nomination. He designed Steven Spielberg's classic "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial."

Lawrence G. Paull's stunning Oscar® nominated work on the seminal "Blade Runner" (1982) is still regarded as the benchmark for sci-fi production. His other work includes "Back to the Future" and "Escape from L.A."

Moderating the panel will be John Muto, who designed "Terminator 2 / 3-D" as well as "Species" and "Home Alone."

Capcom Goes Big At 2007 International Comic-Con in San Diego

Tournaments, demos, freebies, signings, Nerdcore rappers and much, much more!

We will representing in a 30x60 booth that features open gaming stations, allowing attendees to go hands-on with Zack & Wiki, Harvey Birdman, Mega Man Star Force and Mega Man ZX Advent, Ace Attorney: , Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Rocketmen and Moto GP. Devil May Cry 4 and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles will be playable in a private pod for those over the age of 17.

The Capcom store will feature tons of Capcom games (some at blow-out prices!), a new Street Fighter shirt produced exclusively for Comicon, licensed merchandise such as Udon’s rare hardcover Art of Capcom book and some exclusive Japanese merchandise imported specifically for the show! A minute to learn, a lifetime to master.  It was a big hit at E3, but this will be the gaming public’s first chance to get hands-on with the classic competitive puzzling favorite.  SPF2T:HD Remix has a fresh new High-Def look as well as the new “X Prime” mode, featuring all-new drop patterns and rebalanced characters, so the competition is anybody’s game.

The panel will discuss all things Shade related, but specifically Shade II, the follow up to the first ever MMWRPG (Massively Multiplayer Wireless Role-Playing Game), Shade.  Shade II is a brand-new interactive world of dark fantasy by Capcom Interactive Canada studio head and executive producer Dave Dies, character designer Dave Daniels and famed comics writer Marv Wolfman (Teen Titans, Blade) designed to show the world just how fun (and addicting) the world of mobile gaming can be.  Look for the official Shade novel and graphic novel in March 2008 from Prima Games. New Line of Digital Video Comics to Debut at Comic-Con

The studio will adapt existing printed comics, transforming them into a new form of digital video comics for the mass market.

Los Angeles, June 4, 2007-- Every Picture Tells A Story, the leading gallery devoted to children’s book art and children’s literature, will be in booth #4721 at the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con in the Fantasy Art area, from July 25 to 29, at the San Diego Convention Center. They will be showcasing original art and prints from Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, Greg Hildebrandt, John Kricfalusi, Berkeley Breathed, Maurice Sendak, as well as works from the 1933 “King Kong” film and Disney Studios. “We are very excited about this year’s Comic-Con because we have such an exceptional variety of works from leading fantasy illustrators, and to have Ray Harryhausen as our guest is also very special,” said Lee Cohen, who has been curating comic book art for over 18 years and co-founded Every Picture Tells a Story with his wife, Lois Sarkisian. Their gallery has been a destination for comic book enthusiasts and children’s book art collectors since 1989. Jeff Soto is a prolific assembler, creating context out of found material, unwanted debris, jig sawed pieces of wood and bits of the Riverside landscape where he grew up. His paintings feature childhood history: graffiti brothers; 70s pornography; and a love for the desert landscape. Jeff has been experimenting with art all of his life romanticizing about robotic visions of violence, political tension and sex.

Jeff’s paintings feature a delicate understanding of graffiti, paint and collage as warring robots intertwine with organic beasts resulting in a black trail of smog where ominous skulls float above the war torn landscape. Jeff Soto’s handsome calendar package features thirteen calendar months from December 2007 to December 2008 and features one 8” x 8” sticker page with 10 stickers, one 32 page Mini Zine (5 ½” x 8 ½”) that includes photos, sketches—signed, numbered and limited to 1500 copies.

Top 50 Entrants From Around the Globe Pitch Comic Book Concepts at Secret Location near the 2007 International Comic-Con in San Diego
LOS ANGELES, July 20, 2007 - Platinum Studios (www.PlatinumStudios.com), an entertainment media company that controls one of the world’s largest independent libraries of comic book characters, today announced the lineup of judges for Platinum Studios’ 2007 Comic Book Challenge presented by AT&T.  The panelists include John H. Williams, producer for the “Shrek” film series; actor Donald Faison of hit TV program “Scrubs;” Platinum Studios’ CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg,  who discovered the “Men In Black” comic and brought it to the big screen, and D.J. Coffman, winner of last year’s Comic Book Challenge.
“The best part about this year’s panel for Platinum Studios’ 2007 Comic Book Challenge is that we’re truly a group of fans ‘moonlighting’ as Hollywood insiders,” said Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, chairman and CEO of Platinum Studios.  “Donald, John and I all grew up reading and enjoying the genre, and that’s what we’ll be looking for from these Top 50 entrants who have made it to the pitch phase of the Comic Book Challenge.”   
The Top 50 entrants in Platinum Studios’ 2007 Comic Book Challenge will present their concepts to this panel of industry judges live next week at a secret location near International Comic-Con in San Diego.  The annual competition invites aspiring creators from around the world to submit original comic-book concepts in a head-to-head challenge, of which the winner will receive a multi-media development and publishing deal that includes print, online and mobile distribution as well as the creation of a licensing and merchandising program — a rare opportunity for newcomers to a fiercely competitive segment of the entertainment industry.  Additionally, Platinum Studios expects to help develop the property for a potential film and television deal.
“The best part about Platinum Studios’ Comic Book Challenge is that they really offer newcomers the resources and backing needed to make it in today’s comic book industry,” added Williams.  “With 20 years of experience in my back pocket, I can truly say that that’s the kind of team you want in your corner in this industry.”
“As an artist and an actor, I’m truly excited to be a part of a worldwide competition to find some of the industry’s hottest new creators,” said Donald Faison.  “The genre has been one of my favorite pastimes partly because it has again and again proven to be an incubator for some of Hollywood’s biggest films.”
Faison’s and Williams’ screen credits include some of the industry’s most-memorable hits and award-winning series. Williams was a producer on all three of DreamWorks’ “Shrek” installments, as well as films such as “Tuxedo” starring Jackie Chan and “Seven Years in Tibet” starring Brad Pitt.
Actor Donald Faison currently stars as ‘Dr. Christopher Turk’ in his seventh season on NBC’s Emmy-nominated series “Scrubs.” Faison made his film debut in a role opposite Angela Bassett in “Waiting to Exhale,” and has appeared in numerous other major feature films including “Something New,” “Clueless” and “Remember the Titans.”
As the winner of last year’s Comic Book Challenge, D.J. Coffman has received accolades and winning reviews for his debut “Hero By Night.”  The story centers on Jack King, a young man who discovers the secret lair of a 1950’s superhero in his new apartment building and must decide whether or not to use the hero’s source of power to become a superhero himself.
Coffman has a unique role on the panel during this year’s Comic Book Challenge -- providing running commentary and analysis for the AT&T blue room web-broadcast of the Top 50 entrants’ pitches.  Platinum Studios recently welcomed AT&T as the presenting sponsor of the Comic Book Challenge for the next three years.  Fans can see the best the competition has to offer, vote for their favorites online and see the web-broadcast at www.attblueroom.com/hollywood beginning in late July.

With the city under siege and Martial Law in affect, Brad and Lexi struggle to survive with little supply, limited time and no information—all the while separated by thin doors and thinner sheets of plastic. Top Cow Productions is pleased to announce its lineup for exclusives for Comic-Con International: San Diego taking place from July 26th to July 29th and WizardWorld Chicago taking place on August 9th through August 12th. The publisher has a variety of limited edition items available for fans at the premier comic and pop culture shows in the US.

Top Cow will feature three exclusive variant edition comic covers, a fan pack, an exclusive t-shirt, and a full-size statue available for fans attending both shows. Top Cow has chosen to debut its summer event First Born with two special covers, one by digital painter Stjepan Sejic who also makes his first US appearance at Comic-Con and a second cover by hot X-23: Target X artists Mike Choi and Sonia Oback. Both covers will be limited to 1000 units. The third exclusive variant is a new Kenneth Rocafort cover for Madame Mirage #1.  This cover will be limited to 500 units. Top Cow Productions revealed today their signing schedule and programming plans for Comic-Con International: San Diego 2008. The publisher is pleased to feature a bevy of top notch talent including founder Marc Silvestri, actor and producer Seth Green, Wizard Top Ten Artist Mike Choi, First Born architect Ron Marz and Croatian painting sensation Stjepan Sejic on his first US signing tour.

In Trailer Park of Terror, six troubled high school students and their chaperon, an optimistic youth ministries Pastor, return from an outdoor character building retreat in the mountains. During a raging storm, their bus crashes, hopelessly stranding them in the middle of the Trucker's Triangle, a forgotten locus of consummate evil in the middle of nowhere. The hapless group seeks shelter for the night in a seemingly abandoned trailer park they find down the road. However, when the sun sets, it's not refuge they find. Instead, terror finds them in the form of Norma, a damned redneck reaper with a killer body who dispenses vengeance and death aided by her cursed companions, a bloodthirsty brood of Undead trailer trash.

Leading Social Networking Site Provides New Creative Showcase for Its Members      

New York, NY—July 20, 2007—Virgin Comics and MySpace have teamed up to launch Coalition Comix (http://www.myspace.com/coalitioncomix), a new online comic book platform, allowing thousands of participants to work with leading comic book creators in the development and creation of new characters and stories.

Coalition Comix will open up the role of comic book writer to the world at large, allowing participants to providing artistic direction for the comic by voting on the plot twists and turns at each step of the way.

Coalition Comix will commission some of the comic book industry’s leading creators to collaborate with users as virtual “Story Masters.” Leading creators will guide participants to collectively craft new story properties for comics and subsequent development into film, games and animations.

Carey will dialogue with readers and guide the development of the plot at each step along the way by reviewing feedback from readers, and posing questions with five or six choices for the Coalition Comix community to choose from. During this time the Story Master will evaluate progress at timed intervals to give feedback to the community.  Their ideas and votes will determine the final plot, generating a final work of sequential art that was created and influenced by hundreds or even thousands of contributors.

The VIZ Media Prize Patrol is a regular facet of Comic-Con and attendees spotted wearing VIZ Media prize beads (available at the booth) can win special premiums including POKéMON accessory straps, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG and INUYASHA trading card game packs, BOYS OVER FLOWERS purses and more.  Also on hand for giveaway will be manga samplers, including the brand new TEKKONKINKREET manga sampler, anime samplers, SHONEN JUMP and SHOJO BEAT magazine samplers and more.

VIZ Media will screen the first NARUTO feature film — NARUTO THE MOVIE: NINJA CLASH IN THE LAND OF SNOW – at 4:30pm on Saturday, July 27 at the United Artists Horton Plaza Theatre, located walking distance from the Convention Center. Tickets are available for free on a first come, first served basis.  NARUTO is rated T for teen.

Halo 3 Content Revealed as part of Halo ActionClix Collectable Miniatures Game Debut   

July 20, 2007 (Bellevue, WA) — WizKids Inc., a subsidiary of Topps and the creator of runaway hit games such as HeroClix® and Pirates of the Spanish Main™, will unveil an exclusive Halo 3 Scarab at the San Diego Comic-Con 2007 as part of its debut of the Halo® ActionClix™ Collectable Miniatures Game. This Halo 3 figure is the largest miniature (24” x 24” x 20”) WizKids has ever produced. The Halo 3 reveal is one of a number of special Comic-Con events for WizKids.   WizKids will also be showing the recently released Star Wars PocketModel Trading Card Game, and a museum featuring more than 2000 HeroClix Collectable Miniatures at the WizKids’ booth (#2743) in San Diego Convention Center.   

Events at the booth include:

·     Halo 3 Scarab Reveal -- 12:00pm on Thursday, July 26th, WizKids will have an unveiling of the exclusive Halo 3 figure.  One lucky winner who attends this unveiling will receive this limited edition Halo 3 exclusive collector’s item.  In addition, Comic-Con attendees will be able to submit their names for the opportunity to buy one of 500 individually numbered Scarabs produced exclusively for this kickoff event.
