Movie news: 'Preacher' dead at HBO, 'Tintin' musical chairs

Mark Steven Johnson says HBO has passed on his series adapting the classic Garth Ennis-Steve Dillon series "Preacher," saying the feevee channel found the material "too dark, too violent and too controversial." Which is too bad — an HBO series is the way to go with this one, even if a lot of fans will never get over Johnson's "Daredevil."

Reports have been conflicting over who will do what, but it looks like it's coming down that Steven Spielberg will direct the first of three "Tintin" movies with Peter Jackson producing and stepping in to direct the second film.

Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca have joined the cast of "Kick-Ass," based on the comic by Mark Millar of "Wanted" fame and John Romita Jr.

Speaking of Millar, the Scottish writer says that a comicbook sequel to "Wanted" is not in the cards, even as a sequel to the movie version is a near certainty.

The Beat quoted a now-dead blog post from someone who's seen some of the upcoming "Spider-Man" Broadway show directed by Julie Taymor and featuring music by Bono and The Edge of U2 fame. I'm really only inclined to believe this could even begin to work because of the talent involved, who raise expectations to a high level this post suggests will be largely met.

Good.
I don't care if Ghost Rider made money, Mark Steven Johnson has no business anywhere Preacher. It would end up diluted, simplistic and depthless. He has yet to make a superhero movie that wasn't a disappointment to fans.
