MARSHALL STEERING DISNEY'S PIRATE SHIP?
Disney is on the verge of putting Rob Marshall in as director of a fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a move that puts the film on track for a 2010 production start, with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.
There hasn’t been a director at the helm of the pirate ship since April, when Gore Verbinski stepped out to focus on a movie version of the vidgame “Bioshock” for Universal (Daily Variety, April 7, 2009). Though that film’s lost some momentum, Verbinski has moved on to other directing and producing projects.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the “Pirates” film together and have Depp star in it before he does “The Lone Ranger” for the producer and the studio. While Marshall’s involvement wasn’t immediately confirmed, sources said things look good enough that the studio has begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture.
It is big business for Disney, as the “Pirates” trilogy grossed $2.6 billion worldwide with Verbinski at the helm. Sources say unless things break down at the last moment, Marshall will be steering the pirate vehicle’s next installment.
Marshall, who made his feature directing debut with the Oscar-winning musical “Chicago,” most recently completed another musical, “Nine,” which stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson and Sophia Loren. The film will be released November 25 by The Weinstein Co.

Rob Marshall is very famous for doing Musicals, and being Visually rich.
Chicago won the Oscar for best Custom design and Art Direction and Memoirs of a Geisha won best Cinematography, Custom design and Art direction.
I think this move from Bruckheimer mean the next Pirates will be MUSICAL and visually stunning.
After all, Mamma Mia Proved musicals could have a cheerful box office.

I was gonna ask what direction that "PotC" could be taken based on the storyline over the three movies, but Amir Azizi's comments give me a clue. Not sure if I would be drawn to see a musical of "PotC".
The best movie was the first, which laid out a compelling but plausible mythology that was resolved by the end of the movie. The other two were kind of "sloppy seconds".

Disney has been making comeback with muscials (High School Muscial). Why not try for POTC musical?
Besides, POTC is already a muscial (Hoist the colors). I'm kidding, but the music from the past POTCs are my favorites (The Medallion calls).

Wait, if Rob Marshall directs, will he bring along John Williams to write the score?! Williams has said he'd love to work on just about anything for Marshall after he scored Memoirs of a Geisha, and I'd just about die to hear Williams' take on Zimmer's themes!

Not to be rude Mark, but why have Williams, when they
can just as well have Zimmer back? Besides that's unlikely, Williams is going to be scoring Harry Potter 7 nest as far as I know.
Shame. HP isn't worth it, especially since the last one.

WOW! No one here gets it?? This is fascinating NEWS! I enjoyed the first "Pirates" movie, my only caveat was that for all my Lit. science fiction friends & I is that it seemed to steal elements from TIM POWERS, author of the GREAT fantasy/Pirate adventure pastiche "On Stranger Tides" - so NOW they will blend the two? Totally fitting! Just hope they do Mr. Powers Justice- Its a great book -I give out copies to friends who havent read it before. This I'm looking forward to. Cheers!

Oh & PS: The major Mythos figure of "Stranger Tides" was Blackbeard who was a fascinating over the top monster in real life. So look for some spectacular stunt casting of some kind... Some big beefy physical actor like Chicklis or mebe Vin Diesel? (Wish I could be a fly on the wall for THOSE discussions!)
