Ryan Reynolds is the "Green Lantern"
Ryan Reynolds has landed the coveted role of “Green Lantern,” getting the starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.
Martin Campbell will direct. The studio is still working on the picture’s budget, but production is expected to begin in January.
The news caps off a memorable summer for Reynolds, who played Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a performance that prompted Fox to begin development on a spinoff film. Reynolds followed that by starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy “The Proposal,” which crossed the $100 million mark this week.
Warners and Campbell chose Reynolds, who vied for the superhero role along with “The Hangover” star Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended.
Greg Berlanti wrote the script with Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti. Reynolds’ reps at UTA are working out his deal.
The actor will next star in “Buried,” a dark indie drama that will begin filming shortly in Barcelona with Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes. Reynolds will play a civilian contractor who is kidnapped in Iraq and awakes in a coffin, struggling against time to coordinate a rescue even though he doesn’t know where he’s buried in the desert.

Finally, someone noticed Ryan Reynolds!
Ever since I saw him in Blade3, I knew he would make it someday as one of HOllywood's sought after male leads!
Green Lantern was fated to be for him!!

sounds awesome!!

Good.
Now hopefully Bradley Cooper can focus on a more suited role such as Green lantern Guy Gardner.

I trust Cambpell to make a faithful, authentic film. I was hoping for Bradley Cooper, but Ryan Reynolds is a pretty good actor.
Good luck to the whole crew, and make us GL fans proud!

Relax, bariles. It isn't the second coming. It's a "Green Lantern" movie.
People in this country have some odd priorities.

Sorry but am disappointed with this choice. I think he would have made a better Wally West... but we'll have to see.

I would have rather have Ryan as Wally West, as well. But at least him being in this movie is a WIN for me. Ryan Reynolds rocks!

Congratulations to Ryan Reynolds. Here's the GL oath:
In brightest day
In blackest night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might
Beware my power
Green Lantern's light!

I like this choice and can't wait for it!

Bradley Cooper seems a little nicer/less snarky than RR... which means if we want to see them both in a movie, it makes more sense for Reynolds to be GL and Cooper to play the Flash.

Maybe it's just because of me watching 30 years worth of cartoons based on Jordan, but I was hoping for someone with a more commanding voice and stature. I agree with the previous commenter that said he would have made a better Wally West. Hal Jordan isn't a snarky wise-ass, which is the type of character Reynolds is best at.

Fellow Left Coast Canadian Ryan Reynolds cast as Green Lantern. The eventual search for GL couldn't have ended better.

Good for Ryan! Though isn't GL and Deadpool both scheduled for similar release Dates of summer 2011? Deadpool is still on right? It better be or else i won't see another Ryan Reynolds movie ever again.

it would be great it Reynolds dropped the snark and was a little bit more normal but I doubt it. Should be awesome though with Martin Campbell is directing.

ryan reynolds=The Flash, not the Green Lantern...

Actually, I was also hoping for Ryan Reynolds to be the next Flash, too... But I think he'll make a mean Hal Jordan! Cooper would be a good choice for Guy Gardner, but even though I really like his work, I think there are probably better choices for that role.

Yeah, nothing says "Hal Jordan" like Van Wilder. He plays the same snarky, frat-boy character in every movie. It'll be a wonder if he can keep a straight face.

"The momentum built for Reynolds in the last week, as he was the only actor whose option was extended."
That's a good reason. What a disaster.

Great news and a coup for WB's to take Reynolds away from the small time dead end Deadpool film with crappy Fox studios. Now the GL film has a chance to be epic and fun much like Iron Man. Timberlake or Cooper as a lead in a big time franchise type of sci film like GL??
What a joke that would have been!
Now things can get rolling with the potentially awesome GL film! Reynolds has screen presence, charisma and versatility and is a solid choice! An Oscar caliber actor is not needed for this role. A fun charismatic actor with screen presence is needed!

I think he would have been great as the Flash. I think he'll be good as GL too, but Flash would have been better. That fan trailer shows just how good Nathan Fillion would have been as GL and he wasn't trying.

I am pleased with Reynolds as GL. Hal started out as sort of a smart ass know it all in the origin story. He definitely was a bit of a screw up. He was in jail for DWI during his initial training with Sinestro (I am such a nerd for knowing all this). It was time nd experience that made him have the commanding presence and leadership. Hopefully, the character will develop through the movie, and if there are more movies, Reynolds can deliver on that growth.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS, HE CAN'T BE DEADPOOL AND GREEN LANTERN AT THE SAME TIME. WHAT NEXT, CHRISTIAN BALE BECOMES THE NEXT DAREDEVIL? IF RYAN REYNOLDS WAS GOING TO GO FOR ANY DC CHARACTER, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FLASH, BUT EVEN THAT IS PUSHING IT. DESPERATE HOLLYWOOD STRIKES AGAIN!!!
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BRADLEY COOPER

Besides Batman, Warners is having trouble formulating its DC property. Superman needs to be readjusted, and now they pass on Bradley Cooper, hot off of the Hangover, and go with Ryan Reynolds as GL. Ryan Reynolds is now imprinted as a different comic book character in movie goers minds and especially fans minds. They need to fix the direction of these DC heroes...it would please fans and please Warners pocket book if they get serious.
