Pine Beaming Up Jack Ryan Role?

Chris-pine2_fleming Paramount Pictures has begun negotiations with Chris Pine to play CIA analyst Jack Ryan in the reboot of the franchise based on the Tom Clancy novels.

UPDATE: Paramount confirmed this story late Tuesday, and in a statement, Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman said: "Tom Clancy created an unforgettable character with Jack Ryan. With Chris in this role, we've taken our first step in creating a re-boot that lives up to the successful lineage of the franchise."

Pine is positioned to topline his second Par franchise. He played James T. Kirk in “Star Trek,” the JJ Abrams-directed summer hit, and will reprise in the sequel.

Pine is separately in talks to team with director D.J. Caruso in the Paramount drama “The Art of Making Money,” early next year.

Talks are just getting underway, but Pine is expected to come aboard the Jack Ryan film as the project takes shape. The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept. They are still in deep development and it is unclear whether Pine would make another “Star Trek” before the Jack Ryan film. He will clearly be working often for Paramount over the next several years.

Jackryancollection_fleming Pine, currently starring with Denzel Washington in the Tony Scott-directed “Unstoppable” for Fox, is vying to be the fourth actor to play Ryan, the CIA analyst in the Par film series.

Alec Baldwin originated the character in 1990’s “The Hunt for Red October,” Harrison Ford played him in 1992’s “Patriot Games” and 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger,” and Ben Affleck played Ryan in 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears.”

Pine’s repped by SDB Partners and Carrabino Management.

"What about my family!?!?"

Great article. Thank you for posting!

Chris Pine can do ANYTHING. He's an actor AND movie star which is a rare combo these days, as it's usually the one or the other. Have been enjoying BOTTLE SHOCK on cable. Chris is wearing a silly wig, hafta say, but it's a wonderful film, great story, shot in the Napa Valley, and everyone is swell in it. Chris is the real deal; whatever films he signs up for, he'll make them a winner. Rock on, Chris.

Pine may have the backbone to carry off a character like Jack Ryan, by the end of the day a successful franchise such as this comes down to the director! Unless Paramount gets a big name director who can put this type of complex spy blockbuster together it will be a waste of time. Maybe someone like Wolfgang Peterson would be an ideal director following John McTieran and Philip Noyce and the director of the underrated SUM OF ALL FEARS.

"The studio and producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld are working with a script draft by Hossein Amini, based on an original concept."

So, Tom Clancy just whored out the Jack Ryan name? Hollywood did decent job of Hunt for Red October, and Patriot Games...but they ruined Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears. May as well let Hollywood take ALL the blame, I suppose.

Then again, Clancy hasn't written a "Jack Ryan Universe" book since 2003, and hasn't written a good JR book since 1998. Maybe that's why he's not involved...he just can't write a good fiction book anymore.

I would like to see the two books "Debt of Honor" and "Executive Orders" done in movie form. But continually getting younger Jack Ryans makes the likelihood almost impossible. I don't care much for Baldwin, but he fit the Hunt for Red October and would have been okay for these two movies if they were to be done. Oh, well, I guess I will maybe do them myself in stick figure form on paper! Lol.

Ahh, but can he play Stringfellow Hawke?

The next Paul Newman if he perfects his acting chops!

Is he playing a young Ryan? I mean, obviously he is, but is he rewinding to the Affleck Ryan or is he playing College Ryan or what?

Either way, this is awesome. The series could use a reboot- Dan Brown shouldn't be allowed the monopoly on the cerebral hero type, and Jack Ryan would be a nice distraction in these times. Can't wait to see how this all works out!

And wouldn't it be great to see him as Ryan Jr. in The Teeth of the Tiger? :D

There are periods of time that one actor dominates. Years ago it was Mel Gibson then Tom Cruise (never understood that one) then Harrison Ford. But for the last decade there's really been no one of that caliber. Johnny Depp is the closest but he only showed superb acting in the first Pirates...he's not consistent. My point? Chris Pine is probably the only actor working today who has that caliber. All of his work, even the little known stuff shows superb acting sense, including his stage work! He blew me away onstage in L.A. with Farragut North. Star Trek was fine ensemble acting, but Chris really shined. He made Captain Kirk's cockiness more loveable than the Shatman ever could hope for. And I agree about Bottle Shock, excellent. But check out even his early Confession. He puts all bad boys to shame. Even his small part in Smokin' Aces put a smile on my face! He's the one to watch, and with this role, he will be the next Harrison Ford in more ways than one...and even better!

If he can play Ryan as good as Kirk, I'm all for it, in fact I can't think of anyone else on the top of my head to play the part.
Now they need to cast Robert Redford as Clark .. before he gets too much older, and finally get around to making the Rainbow Six movie

Thanks a lot for the post. I hope to read more from you!
