A Personal Inventory of 2009: 242 TV Reviews?
Journalists love marking the end of a year with lists. But there are plenty of places where you can find rehashes of the best and the worst of the year or the decade.
So instead, I thought I'd clean out my critical closet by taking inventory of 2009 strictly in terms of volume.
And frankly, upon further review, it's no wonder I'm cranky.
Here's the 2009 list, and don't hold me to it, because I relied on Variety.com for most of the data:
-- 242 TV reviews
-- Nearly 100 columns
-- More than 350 blog posts, at least 12 of which were actually interesting.
-- Saw more than 50 movies in theaters (and reviewed about 10 of them. I was actually too lazy to comb through that list precisely).
-- Countless episodic hours of television viewed that I didn't write about -- sometimes for pleasure, other times as homework.
Even in a media-obsessed age, that's way more than the average person consumes -- and one of the things that critics have to guard against. It's important to try to look at new programs (or returning ones) with a fresh set of eyes -- or at least, not a completely jaundiced pair of them.
In other words, seems like a good time to take a break, so I'll be crashing various D.C. events in pursuit of my own Bravo reality show.
Happy holidays.
