Will Hollywood board the Twain memoirs?
This fall, Mark Twain's long-awaited autobiography will finally see the light of day. The uncensored "Autobiography of Mark Twain: Volume I" will be released by University of California Press in November.
For nearly a century, the 5,000 page manuscript had been locked away in a vault at the request of the literary figure, who, while on his deathbed, asked that the personal writings not be made public until at least a century after his death.
Critics believe the iconic Southerner chose to postpone the publication due to controversial politics and religious views expressed in the memoirs. Others think Twain was simply protecting his friends and family from embarrassment.
Either way, the Twain memoirs sound like an intriguing offering for Hollywood. The movie industry has long-coveted the biopic genre and Twain was always known to carry a sharp tongue. The "Huck Finn" scribe, considered by many to be the father of American humor, led an adventurous social life in which he befriended presidents, artists, European royalty and industrialites during his rise to fame. He was also a strong political voice during the early 20th century, speaking out on such issues as slavery, women's rights, the Church, and imperialism, which he vehemently opposed.
Born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Twain also endured a number of dramatic events in his own personal life, including the death of his brother who was killed in a steamboat explosion. Additionally, Twain wallowed in financial hardships after achieving success as a writer/public speaker, something that forced the author to embark on an around-the-world lecture tour in order to pay off his debts.
As for the upcoming memoirs, Twain is said to have written about everything from God to politics and in one instance, a vibrating sex toy.
"The Autobiography of Mark Twain: Volume I" hits bookshelves in November.
