It Works!
Posting your resume to a job that is... Believe it or not, recruiters still look at resumes from job-seekers that post on-line... job boards are NOT black holes! I recently filled two jobs with folks that applied on-line, in response to an ad. Great jobs too, not the entry level mass reply types of jobs...
Their resumes were great - short, sweet and to the point - and most importantly, they had the right experience. I think it's a big misconception that resumes get lost in the void - recruiters do look at most resumes posted - they look for relevant experience (past jobs, industry, skills) - again, relevant experience. Worst case scenario, if you do not have the right experience, we may keep your resume in our secret stash for a later date (you'd be amazed at how many people are genuinely shocked when I call them 6 months after they applied for a different job!)
In this world of on-line social networking, have people forgotten about the power of posting the resume?
Sometimes, I think so - but let me tell you plain and simple - post the resume - get back to basics - it works.
Ellen Goldsmith is currently the VP, Human Resources for FremantleMedia North America, a dog lover, travel enthusiast, and entertainment industry vet.
I am a non-traditional student (early 30's) with a former degree (BA), finishing up another BA in film and television production. I have a credit for being the assistant director on a small independent film. When one does not have that much media related experience on a resume to speak of, how do we show our best side without blatantly exacerbating that industry credibility may be lacking.
Also, if anyone has a "good" looking resume which I can emulate and reach for, I would appreciate seeing what a polished product looks like. Mail to: livinm80@uwosh.edu Even if it was a generic name, content, etc...it would be a great help.
Thanks for the head's up!
Have a great Thanksgiving.

Hi Ellen, I just stumbled upon your blog. Very informative. I can vouch for the fact that applying through the company job board works. I've gotten jobs at Sony and Fox this way. It does work!

Great blog! So glad I found you, keep up the great work!
Also, a note on the "research" entry, I am mid career and switching tracks from the legal industry to the business side of advertising, and am looking for internships while I'm in school. While I'm not exactly certain where I want to land, I know better than to walk into an interview without knowing anything about the company for which I'm applying for a job!
Can't wait to read more...
