Nintendo Turns Away from HDTV
Nintendo is once again turning away from emerging technologies with their new game console, even as Sony and Microsoft are embracing them.
In the last iteration of the console wars, Nintendo declared they would be foregoing any Internet-connected gaming, instead focusing on its solo and two-player games. That turned out to be a huge mistake, particularly after Sony and MS launched their networked play. Nintendo quickly sunk to third in the console market.
Now, according to the New York Times, even as Sony and MS are embracing high definition television -- which will include game makers creating games that will specifically look and sound good on the screens -- Nintendo has decided not to optimize its console for HDTVs.
The takeaway: as Sony and MS vie for control of the home entertainment hub (DVD, CD, game, and living room Internet access), Nintendo appears happy to target the market of gamers under the age of 12.
