Hawaii gets another TV production: Shonda Rhimes' 'Off the Map'

Offthemap
They may have lost "Lost," but Hawaii's film and TV production business is still booming.

Next up comes word that Shonda Rhimes' upcoming ABC drama "Off the Map" will shoot in the islands. (In other words: Shoots, brah, ABC wen' say "hana hou" aftah "Lost" wen' wrap.)

ABC Studios' "Off the Map" now joins CBS' "Hawaii Five-O" as the second new primetime series to start production in Hawaii this season.

The pilot to "Map" was produced in Puerto Rico. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser (gah! I'm not used to that merged paper's new name just yet), Honolulu Film Office Commissioner Walea Constantinau said ABC initially passed on shooting the "Map" pilot there in the spring because there were too many productions already there -- and not enough resources left over. Writes the paper:

In January, as film industry officials here wondered whether they would be able to replace "Lost" after its finale, ABC began discussing "Off the Map." But there were too many projects in the pipeline, including the final, frenzied episode schedule of "Lost," the big-screen movie "The Descendants" with George Clooney," and the pilot for "Hawaii Five-0."

"They wanted to film the pilot here, but we were so busy at the time with multiple shows that we were reaching capacity with facilities and available equipment," Constantinau said.

Hawaii has a friend in ABC Entertainment Group's studio exec VP Barry Jossen, who's a Kalani High School grad.

"We've really enjoyed working with the state of Hawaii and our amazing crew during the past six seasons on "Lost," and we look forward to continuing those relationships on "Off the Map," Jossen said in a statement.

In "Off the Map," Hawaii will double for the Amazon. Show, created by Jenna Bans, centers on a group of young, idealistic doctors who move to South America to staff a small clinic that lacks basic amenities.

Hawaii last saw two network shows in production at the same time in 2005, when "Lost" shot at the same time as Fox's short-lived "North Shore."
