FX gives 13-episode order to 'Wilfred'

Wilfred 1
FX has given a series order to its U.S. adaptation of "Wilfred," the dark Australian comedy about a talking dog and his troubled neighbor.

"Wilfred" has been picked up for 13 episodes. The live action comedy stars Elijah Wood and Jason Gann, who co-created the show, is reprising his role as Wilfred (which he also played in the Australian version).

FX Networks exec VP Nick Grad announced the pickup on Monday.

"Family Guy" alum David Zuckerman is behind the adaptation, and is exec producer and showrunner. Randall Einhorn ("It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia") directed the pilot.

Wood stars in "Wilfred" as a man who is struggling in both his personal and professional lives. He then meets “Wilfred” (Gann) -- described by Zuckerman as "part Australian Shepherd, part Russell Crowe on a bender."

Show also stars Fiona Gublemann as Wood's neighbor (and Wilfred's owner).

“We loved how well the pilot turned out, and we were blown away by the chemistry between Elijah Wood and Jason Gann,” Grad said. “It’s a very unique concept and we think David Zuckerman has a great take on it.”

Rich Frank, Paul Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park are exec producers, along with Joe Connor and Ken Conner of Renegade, producers of the Australian version of "Wilfred." Gann is co-EP. FX Productions is behind the show.

FX continues to bolster its comedy lineup. Besides "Wilfred," FX airs the laffers "Louie," "Archer," "The League" and vet comedy "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
