NBC redeveloping comedy 'Early Bird'
NBC is dusting off the Rodney Rothman project "Early Bird," which the Peacock first developed in 2005.
Based on Rothman's book of the same name, the single-camera comedy centers on a twentysomething guy who moves into a retirement community. Rothman, a former "Late Show with David Letterman" writer, did the same thing -- which led to the book.
Rothman is writing the new version and exec producing, while Howard Klein and David Miner are also the EPs.
The 2005 version of "Early Bird" was shot as a pilot and a hot contender for air -- but ultimately wasn't picked up. Paul Feig directed the pilot, which starred Timm Sharp in the main role. Bill Macy, Larry Hankin, Luis Avalos, Robert Culp, Valerie Hurt, Renee Taylor and Polly Bergen also starred.
NBC is currently redeveloping and plans to shoot, but is waiting for the finished script before making a firm pickup. Universal Media Studios is behind the show, along with 3 Arts Ent.
Rothman's TV credits also include "Undeclared," "Committed" and "Help Me Help You." He's also been busy producing features, including "Get Him to the Greek," "Year One" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."
