Fans of Fox's "Glee" came out in droves to see members of the cast and crew talk about the upcoming season of last year's surprise phenom. After an extended highlight reel of last season's best moments, Ryan Murphy & Co. talked candidly about the skein tuner and what to expect in the second season.
 
How was shooting the Madonna episode?
Ryan Murphy: Most shoots are eight or nine days, but this was twelve, and it went over budget in the first few days. It was hard, but I told the kids "Do it for Madonna."
The "Vogue" video was the funniest day because we were so exact. We even used props from the video found in the warehouse. The whole episode was done with a lot of love and care.
 
Can you give us a preview of the next season?
RM: I think people think we are going to get bigger, but we are going to go in a different direction. The characters pop so much, so the second season will be more intimate, based on the feedback of fans. We'll have more tribute episodes but do five musical numbers per episode rather than eight.

Thursday morning's Emmy nominations offered up an interesting mix of suprises -- both for what was nominated and what wasn't nominated. On the one hand, "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" scored four noms -- a nice send-off for O'Brien after what happened at NBC. On the flip side, "The Big Bang Theory" shockingly didn't score an Emmy nom for outstanding comedy, despite a heroic campaign by Warner Bros. TV.

It was also a good day for "Modern Family," and "Glee," as many of both shows' cast members scored noms on top of a nod in the outstanding comedy category. It's a freshman smackdown!

"Glee," in particular, had a good morning, scoring 19 noms -- the most of any series, period. Only "The Pacific," with 24 nods, scored more.

Don’t call “Glee” a musical – at least not to co-executive producer Brad Falchuk’s face.

“I’m not a big musical fan,” Falchuk said at the show’s Television Critics Assn. panel today. “I don’t like musicals and I didn’t want to make a musical.  The idea was to attract people like me and (showrunner Ryan Murphy) …I hope we’re so good that people can’t not watch.”

And that’s why Falchuk and the “Glee” crew have cautious optimism that the show’s momentum won’t fall off after its successful preview following an episode of “American Idol” in May.

“Sometimes things find a niche audience, and oftentimes those are very high-quality things that can’t find a broad audience,” he said. “I don’t think we have that problem. I think we are for a broad audience.”

To be sure, the music promises to be a big attraction. Executive producer Dante Di Loreto said there’s a deal in place with Columbia for a soundtrack CD to come out in November, and with success, a second CD as quickly as December.

Di Loreto added that there has been no wanted song that has gotten away.

“We’ve been very, very fortunate,” he said. “We really have gotten every song we wanted. … Our show isn’t any different than any Fox show in terms of budget, but instead of smashing cars and planes, we’re singing songs and dancing.”
