"30 Rock": Baldwin's one-man show

30_rock_1025Wow. Alec Baldwin got quite the head start on his 2008 Emmy clip reel with an outrageous scene as Jack Donaghy at the end of NBC's "30 Rock" on Thursday.

Having convinced Tracy (Tracy Morgan) that he needs to see a therapist to work through issues of being abandoned by his father, Jack then gets involved in the therapist's role-playing session — and quickly takes on not only the role of Tracy's father, but Tracy's mother, Tracy himself, "the white dude that my moms left my dad for" and upstairs neighbor Mrs. Rodriguez.

"You know, it's too bad you didn't know Howard Cosell growing up, because I had that one in my pocket the whole time," Jack concludes with triumphant pleasure.

Everyone takes a hit as far as stereotypes go, which the therapist's attempted interventions indicate that the show is fully aware of. With that caveat, enjoy the scene, which can be found 14 minutes into the episode.

Wonderful page may make endless growth, with thanks present, all the build up about skills can be to keep on getting to know, curiosity is normally the start of immense success.

This skit was so wrong and yet so funny!!! I am AA and I could not think of anything but how Baldwin has Redd Foxx down to a tee. If you found it offensive, sorry. But me, I'm going to laugh every time I think of it.

JD

I am a 30yr old black woman and my sisters and I found Alec Baldwin's part to be hysterical. We laughed so hard and long we hit the floor from falling off of the couch!! I haven't laughed that much in a very long time. Brilliant. Love Alec! Love the Tina, love the whole cast, love the show! Keep up the good work.

Did everyone miss that these weren't voices he was doing, but were impressions? From the very first line he spoke he was doing Redd Foxx from Sanford and Son and then James Walker from Good Times. It was brilliant, and it's what made the Howard Cosell line so funny.

Zuzu

It was hilarious.
Not racist. No other character on the show has been humiliated and demeaned more that Alec Baldwin.
Tina Fey got spit in the mouth by a homeless person!
The show is an equal opportunity offender.

Everyone in here that called that scene racist needs to stop and buy a sense of humour. No one complains when Dave Chappelle, Martin Lawrence, or any other african american comedian does a "white voice". You just laugh and find it funny, as you should. The fact you're complaining that Alec Baldwin did a "black voice" does nothing but paint you to be a hypocrite. It was a hilarious scene.

Brian

I am black and I didn't find Alec Baldwin's performance racist at all. The poster below needs to lighten up: the show is casting a light on the crazy stereotypes we see in the media. If anything, it is a sobering social commentary than a racist tirade.

As an African American I was offended by Alec Baldwin's imitation of African Americans. Baldwin's performance was racist. 30 Rock is a racist ministrel show. Every week there's a joke or comment about being black. I urge Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Ministr Louis Farrakhan to approach NBC and tell the network to put a stop to the race jokes or call for all African Americans to boycott the sponsors of 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live, and picket the NBC studios in New York City. Tina Fey is not as talented as people think. She has to rely on race jokes because 30 Rock is not funny.

My thoughts exactly about Alec Baldwin's Emmy. The voices were dead-on. If you closed your eyes, Baldwin did not sound like a White guy doing a "Black man".

it was hilarious--saw it when it was on tv. wonder if there is outrage from the politically correct police, a.k.a. everyone in hollywood except, apparently, the 30 rockers. doubt there is much outrage since part of the politically correct police job description is "must be a hypocrite".
