The best of iTunes: 2010

Apple has put together its list of the top apps and downloads for 2010 – giving an interesting look at how its user base is using its various products. Itunes-bestof

Games rule supreme for iPhone owners, who pushed them to the top of the paid program charts, but for iPad users, business software beat out everything else.

“Angry Birds,” not surprisingly, was the game of the year. It beat all other apps on the iPhone, followed by “Doodle Jump,” “Skee-Ball,” “Bejeweled 2 + Blitz” and “Fruit Ninja”. “Angry Birds” also was the fourth most popular paid app on the iPad.

But it appears that more people are using the iPad to get work done. Apple’s Pages app was the most popular, followed by “GoodReader” (a PDF reader), and the Numbers app (which generates spreadsheets). After “Angry Birds,” “Keynote” took the fifth spot.

Among TV shows, “Glee: The Power of Madonna" bested the "Lost" finale for the top spot. "iCarly: iSaved Your Life Special Extended Version" took third. As for films (which combined rentals and sales), "The Hurt Locker" was number one, followed by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," "Hot Tub Time Machine," "Iron Man 2," and "Zombieland."

My colleague Christopher Morris – yeah, it’s as confusing to us here at Variety as it is to the rest of the world – has a rundown of the top music downloads in a separate story. Apple, as usual, did not provide hard sales numbers for any of the lists.
