Ghostbusters game delayed to 2009, but who's publishing it?
By now everybody knows that Activision Blizzard didn't include "Ghostbusters," which was scheduled to come out this fall, on the list of Vivendi games it is planning to publish post-merger.
But beyond a vague statement from a PR rep that the game is "not canceled," there's been no indication yet of what will happen to the "Ghostbusters" game. Since it's so close to completion, surely it won't just be thrown to oblivion and never published, right?
I got some answers today from Sony Pictures, which of course owns the rights to "Ghostbusters" and licensed the IP to Vivendi last year. The studio gave me official word that it is working with Activision Blizzard "to evaluate various options surrounding the release of the 'Ghostbusters' video game." That's obviously vague, but it does contain an important nugget: it wants the game to be released, one way or another.
Sony goes on to state that "this has presented [Sony Pictures Consumer Products] with an opportunity to reevaluate the game release marketing strategy to potentially coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original film in '09."
So the studio's plan now is to get the game released in 2009. But who will publish it? There's no official word yet, but my understanding from further reporting is that
Activision Blizzard and Sony are talking to other publishers about picking up the game right now. Given the strength of the brand and the marketing that has already gone into the game, I can't imagine the studio will have any trouble finding multiple interested partners. The only question may be whether that new publisher can reach a deal with Activision Blizzard to pay for the millions already spent on development.
Of course regardless of who releases it, developers Terminal Reality and Red Fly now have an extra year to work on the game. So there's no reason it shouldn't be really good.

I don´t think you have to make the same scenes, mainly because we are talking about a old movie so you can think the game is old-fashioned, they emphasized the old movie more than the new villains but I remember my childhood so it could be nice to play it and remember old times!

Bottom line, as a huge Ghostbuster fan for my entire life, even if this game is the worst piece of shit ever released as far as graphics or gameplay is concerned, it is still worth purchasing because not only to you get a chance to replay important scenes from the first two movies, but it has a 3rd movie story line written as a script by the same people who made the originals. Even if I hated every minute of gameplay I would still enjoy every cutscene and watching the next installment of a franchise that I have been waiting on for years. I have honestly been thinking they should make a new Ghostbusters game for the last 10 years and the time is right.. people are going to eat this game up even if it sucks. Besides, from everything I have seen it doesn't look like it's going to suck. Please, please, please, do all of us GB fans (and yourselves) a huge favor and publish this game as soon as possible. It will make fucktons of fans happy and make everyone involved in the game's production and distribution a fuckload of cash. If this falls in the cracks because some stupid ass exec doesn't think the game is up to snuff at Activision or anywhere else I will personally never purchase another game they do release as long as I live. I will boycott anyone and everyone responsible for this absurdly stupid decision. Get on the ball mother fuckers.

It can have some things such as when a publisher *such as EA* take over they owns everything. And when they do they can do whatever they want. So in short game makers just want the game to be published but still have control over it.
Ofcourse this is just an Idea.
Time will tell

I personaly can't understand why Activision dropped this game.. I seen the trailer for this game, watched several walk throughs about the game and it looks amazing.
I was definately looking forward to buying this one. I enjoyed the film, im sure the games going to be fun. Im with everyone else.. im just glad i didnt preorder this one. But i will still buy it when it comes out.

what a libberty, if there is one thing that gets to me its the fact stupid companys, who make so much money from people like you and i alike, have the nerve to fill our heads with proppergander about something we NEED, in this case its none other then the ghostbusters video game, im just glad i didnt pre-order it, if it was up to me this game would have came out a coupple of years ago, stop keeping me waiting, i am looseing my cool with the hole situation!!!

I am just as upset as most fans here, but seeing that the game is in fact near completion and that it has gotten fairly big hype, I don't think it will be completely canceled. Too much has already gone into this game to just throw it away.
As far as a publisher, I was talking to an employee at GameStop and EA Games was thrown into the conversation. I realize that there are many mixed opinions when it comes to EA (especially with their PC games), but no matter who the publisher is the work that Terminal Reality put in should remain intact.

What the F--k is Activisions problem, I've been waiting for this game for two months to come, and now they cancel it. What kind of bulls--t is that. And I even pre-ordered the game which I took my money off of it. And see they F--k with your mind. So I geuss I have to wait, Party on GB Fans, GB Rules.

Is activision blizzard that stupid? To snuff not only Ghostbusters (which is going to sell huge numbers of pre-orders alone)with original cast members attached and pretty much all the hard work done already (really how hard is it to recoup distribution) but also Tim Schaffer's new game Brutal Legend that has Jack Black attached to it (the kids love him). Do they all have Brain Slugs or does Blizzard not do anything that doesn't involve Starcraft, Warcraft, or Diablo...really? I'm not even that excited about Diablo 3 and I played the crap out of the first two. This will blow up in activision's face...mark my words...this may just be THE worst decision since Greedo shooting first...

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER FOR A SEQUEL AND THAT HAS BEEN DELAYED FOR 10 YEARS OR SO. THEN, THEY GET ME ALL EXCITED ABOUT A VIDEO GAME...AND NOW THEY ARE DELAYING THAT?!?! GET ON THE F-ING BALL! THIS NEEDS TO BE RELAYED TO WHOEVER THE BRIGHT AND SHINY STAR IS THAT HAS DECIDED TO DELAY ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2008!! NOW THEY DEFINITELY OWE US FANS A MOVIE TOO!! GET US ALL HARD AND THEN WALK AWAY AND LEAVE US WITH BLUE BALLS? I DONT THINK SO! ILL STRAP MY UNLICENSED NUCLEAR ACCELERATOR ON MY BACK AND SEND A CHARGE UP THEIR A$$, WILL THAT GET THEM GOING?
Posted by: GB FAN 4 LIFE | September 06, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Well I was going to buy a PS3 just for this game when it came out, but now I won't bother. Why is Activision allowed to own or merge with every other game company? I mean, Blizzard, Sierra, Vivendi Universal, aren't there any antitrust laws anymore?
Posted by: Athanasius | September 05, 2008 at 08:24 PM
this game is dead. no publisher means no game period so we might as well just forget about it. they (sony pics) supposedely have a release date of march 31st of 2009. whether or not this true remains to be seen.
once again i'd like to say this is no way a fact.
but i would like to keep hope alive so heres to u ghostbusters god speed.
Posted by: david | September 02, 2008 at 09:56 AM
From my understanding, the game is essentially "Ghostbusters 3". The original cast wanted to make a third movie, but they've gotten a little too aged to play the parts. The game was a way for them to have a third movie and still be a huge part of it. It's why Dan Akroid and Harrold Ramis agreed to write the script for the game and they got all the original cast for the voices. Which is fantastic and rare for a video game.
I've been anticipating this game for years and am a huge fan of the franchise. I sincerely hope that they find a company to publish it. *fingers crossed*

Activision I seen some of your games I like them. But why would you disrespect the ghostbusters franchise in such a rude manner? You should be apart of this you could be makin some huge money of this.Activision I Know deep down you want to help get Ghostbusters published either on October 21,2008 or October 31,2008.Do it for the fans do it for the people who respect you because I respect you guys&ladies of Activision.Oh heres an idea publish it under ActiBliz that sounds like a perfect idea.Do it for the fans do for every man & woman of the franchise who dress up as a Ghostbuster every Halloween.Activision do it because you know its the right thing to do.I respect you guys for your merge with Sierra you think it isn't right to take credit for Ghostbusters The Video Game.Well you guys are technically Sierra company since you merge together you have lots of rights to be apart of this game.Remember this before I go you are to me Activision & Sierra now you and Terminal Reality & Red Fly Studios have some Development & Publishing to do.Respect & Honor to you guys from Activision.

For those of you who can't understand "why" they may not be publishing it or why they don't already have a new publisher. Under these circumstances, it tends to be that the game really is no good. If the game isn't any good, they will take a loss in publishing it. Better to cut your losses and accept what was spent on development thus far (marketing usually spends more than the development of the game). If the game was really good, and almost finished, a new publisher would have been announced within a week of this. Just saying...

I'm sure there will be a publisher for this, just a matter of time, maybe ubisoft? lol or Tom Clancy: Ghostbusters
I want to see the reaction from Activision if this game turns out a great hit

I watched the trailer and it seems almost a copy of the movie, I don´t think you have to make the same scenes, mainly because we are talking about a old movie so you can think the game is old-fashioned, they emphasized the old movie more than the new villains but I remember my childhood so it could be nice to play it and remember old times!

I have loved the ghostbusters all my life since i was a little kid. I just don't understand why the game that was in the voting for top 5 anticipated games to come out for 08 would suddenly be dropped by activision. I was the first persone to reserve a copy of the ghostbusters video game where i live at gamestop. Activision is going to be losing a lot of money because of what they did to this product. I think that they made a bad choice and i hope some awesome publisher will publish this game and get it out for holloween like it was supposed too. there's so much talk about it i just can't see it being pushed back now. PlEASE PUBLISH WERE ALL WAITING FOR THIS AMAZING GAME TO COME OUT
Posted by: Jason Tanner | August 05, 2008 at 11:53 PM
I'm just wondering why a company like Activision would say that they aren't publishing a game that has a script written by two people famous for directing and acting, 4 talented voice actors (main cast) and others who are willing to reprise their roles, is based on a REALLY good franchise, and is really near completion.
Posted by: Tony | August 02, 2008 at 02:10 AM
They better not be pushing it back till 2009. I already reserved this at ebgames.

This is in NO way a 2009 confirmation. That word "potentially" kind of writes that off. The title of this article is inaccurate at the moment.

I don't care who's publishing, I'm buying. I hope there's a special edition in a metal "trap" shaped case or something.
