Saving games to the Xbox 360's hard drive makes them look better

As I wrote on Wednesday, I have found Microsoft's updated version of Xbox Live to be a mixed bag navigation-wise. And I haven't used a few key features like parties or Netflix yet.

FabledogBut there's one feature I'm using that is undeniably awesome: Saving games to the hard drive. As soon as I got the NXE (new Xbox experience) beta test, I immediately saved "Fable 2" to the hard drive, mainly because the game is constantly accessing data from the disc and it is loud, even by Xbox 360 standards. I was hoping I would no longer be distracted by the noise of a disc spinning with such fury it could fly out of the machine and behead me and I was right. The 8 minutes or so it took to transfer the game to my hard drive was well worth it, because the 360 is now virtually silent while I play.

But there was one extra, unexpected benefit: "Fable 2" looks noticeably better. The graphics are sharper and brighter. So much so that it's like the game, or my graphics processor, has gotten an upgrade. Perhaps someone more familiar with programming can tell me why, but I assume it has to do with the fact that it's easier for the console to access and process all the requisite data, so it has to make fewer compromises to deliver me graphics in real time.

Nobody at Microsoft (or anywhere else) has talked about this benefit that I've seen I can't say whether it will happen with every title. But presuming so, it really makes transferring games to the hard drive a no-brainer, so long as you've got the space. Who doesn't want their videogames to look as sharp as possible?

(In terms of hard drive management, I imagine I'll be regularly transferring and deleting different games based on how much space I have and what games I'm playing the most at the moment.)

damn you leanr something new every day. But its abit shameful on Microsofts part for them to have to make you install the games if you want them to see the full potential graphically

i still dont see a point to this because you still need the disk to play the game, and its not like the games load quicker

After installing the games 2 your hard drive can any gamer profine in my hard drive play on it ???

Yeah, its good that I can install Fable 2 to my Hard Drive, I noticted straight away that when I paused the game with the disc spinning it took quite a bit (4 seconds), where as with it installed to the hard drive it took less time and this is awesome. Every game I have installed seems better off in some form.

It is the goonzu gold which make me very happy these days, my brother says goonzu money is his favorite games gold he likes, he usually buy some goonzu online gold to start his game and most of the time he will win the buy goonzu gold back and give me some cheap goonzu gold to play the game.

Wow you are all noobs. His games look better because the load time of rendering textures has been reduced making the image look cleaner. Studies have shown this to be one of the few perks to saving a game to hdd although it is only true for a few select games Fable II being one of them. Another major perk that most people have not discussed is the fact that you are now not running the hell out of your rom. This will greatly improve the lifetime of it.

It also helps if you have a scratched disk to download the game. Download time may take a few extra minutes but you can play the game like it is shinny clean.

Is there a way to insert a disk into the tray that is used to trick the xbox into thinking that it is game you are playing. This would make it much easier to use because you would no longer have to switch disks, and you could just rent games and copy them.

Ahhh..good thing i got 120GBs I love my xbox360Elite it was worth it

Due to the fact you need the game disc to play games saved on the HD, is it possible to use copied versions of the game disc once the game's been installed on the HD by the original disc?

I find this to be a useless function. I have my 360 connected to a good surround sound. I am not looking to make things quieter, and heating has not been an issue. If I have to put in the disc I am wasting my time to load to my hard drive. I find this to feel like a reason for MS to sell hard drive with the guise of it's less noisy and runs a tenth of a second faster. I was hoping to be able to switch games without having to walk over and stick in a disc. I am doing that now then there is no reason for me to waste 6-8 gbs of hard drive space per game.

you need the actual disk to load up the game stored on the hd. so, no, you can't just rent games and save them.

The guy is nice enough to fill people in about his experience about NXE and all you guys can do is argue about why the graphics would look better? Who cares; Really. My attention is set on how quiet the system actually runs with the game, seeing as how I like to hear the game sounds instead of the overheating monstrosity known as the 360(Please, no comments going, "Blah-Blah-Blah, I've never had overheating problems." be cause frankly- 360's do in fact have a history of heating problems.)

Another thought about the new hard drive feature is that many people experiencing disk reading problems may have hope if a friend could copy a game to said victims hard drive. I myself have two 360's that can't read disks, and a third that is starting to have fan problems. The option would most certainly bring them out of the Arcade-Only pit if the actual game disc is no longer needed to play the game.

Many games (including Fable 2) use a multiple-resolution texture system. The game loads low-res textures for objects in the distance, and then swaps in high-res textures only when it needs to. The streaming tech in Fable 2 is not perfect and the high-res textures often don't load in time (or even at all) because the DVD access time is too slow to keep up with all the texture requests. You can hear it grinding away at the disc if you play, seeking back and forth constantly.

Fable 2, like any game that uses multiple-resolution textures, will look better when installed to the hard drive because the high-res textures will be much faster to access and will show up at the appropriate time.

I suspect some of you guys/girls are jumping to conclusions here. It may be that the Fable 2 streaming engine causes slowdowns in other game processes, which as I've played it I've seen a really odd amount of jumpiness in the graphics (even in really basic stuff like blacksmithing, the meter does not seem as fluid as it should be) which seems to correspond with the data access on the DVD. It could even be that it's only affecting certain drives or systems, for all we know.

As for myself, I'll definately be installing it to the drive just based on that.

try deleting the game from the HDD and then load it up. Is the graphical improvement consistent?

Why do they let nimrods like this write technology related articles?

If you believe that shit: If you open up your xbox and remove the It's the graphics acceleratorometer bypass induction module (third chip left of the CPU), it'll make the graphics even better by bumping it up to 1900x1200x48 bit color AND it'll speed up the system!

If this is true, I suspect it has something to do with heat.

Perhaps your 360 was running too hot until now. This can cause things like the GPU slowing down to protect itself from overheating. As the dvdrom isn't constantly spinning a disc it puts off less heat. This allows the GPU to run as it was supposed to all along.

Just a guess.

With the feature to save games to hard drive, does it still require the game disc to initially boot? Or does this mean we'll be getting a lot of brand new games for the cost of one rental of the disc? Because if so - that's awesome.

I suggest copying Mass Effect to the hard drive to test the theory out. If it is a disc bottleneck, it will be apparent, as Mass Effect uses graphical layering, and as you turn toward objects, they get progressively more detailed. My guess is that there's a bottleneck in the speed it is able to cache the mapping and textures that prevents it from doing it all much quicker.

just installed nxe and tried the new resolution setting on my 1680x1050 monitor... for those wondering about how the NXE handles 1680x1050, the system letterboxes the screen :(

I'm looking forward the this update for the very reason you mentioned.

Thanks for taking the time to post about it :)

Quote: It's either new drivers for the graphics chip, or Fable 2 has a texture management system responding to how long textures take to load, this is usually seen in pop in though.
MOst likely it is a new form of sampling they are using for the mip maps/filtering i.e. new drivers.

If you think about it, that would be the only way that the graphics really COULD be improved. That makes perfect sense considering there's not really many other ways that the graphics could be made to look better other than through the rendering.

The game doesn't have to render the textures off the disc any more, what it does is it almost installs the game like it would on a PC. (Ex. organization of filetypes) This will produce a slightly improved graphic because the games textures are now pre-loaded instead of loading off the disc. It will slightly reduce anti-aliasing (not ALOT) as well. Just makes the graphics a bit sharper is what I'm explaining. I wonder how this loading the game on the HD will effect online as well since the game doesn't have to load from the cd.. perhaps better loading times in rooms and hosting improved? let's hope so...

Mip-maps, look it up.

I'm pretty sure you just made this up in your mind. Too much positive thinking?

Think about it. If this actually happend Microsoft would be saying it at every opportunity.

Is this update for xbox 360 out already or is it still beta.

That is because of updated hardware drivers stored in NXE.

Don't you remember how often you updated your ATI or NVidia drivers 2 or 3 years ago?

I think i may know why, depending on what tv or monitor you are using. If you are using a monitor size 22" or any other 16:10 contrast ratio display, the NXE has support for a new resolution 1680X1050, this is boviously a huge bump from the previous maximum 16:10 resolution of 1368X765. If that is the case, then it explains why you see such a huge difference.

Nice post... I think I'll stick saving to my Hard Drive :)

The only thing the hard drive could possibly do is elivate pop-in were textures are loaded in and out.

The player sees this as low resolution textures suddenly pop in to high resolution textures, the limitations of DVD speed cause this a lot. But with HD's it can be reduced not completely as ultimately it's a RAM issue but the speed of loading and unloading textures is improved.

That's my best guess as to what you saw, to makes textures sharper in game you must use anisotropic filtering but this requires the GPU to do it at a performance cost so I cant see how copying the data to the HD magically turned up the AF levels. The brightness I've no idea about that one (you sure the NXE update didnt mess with the display settings if left to auto over HDMI).

You should try Mass Effect that game is notorious for pop-in it doesn't seem at all to use the HD for caching data so there should be a noticeable improvement if you install that one to the HD.

Maybe it has more to do with how often textures are loaded in Fable 2? One of the complaints a lot of the reviews I've read are texture jump ins, where it has trouble loading them and they will just jump in abruptly. Maybe this voids that problem?
