Vote for your top 10 games of 2008
I know Cut Scene readers aren't always the most prolific commenters. We've got thousands of readers per day, so it's not a problem of traffic, but I'm guessing it's because many of you are busy professionals, not loud
mouthed fanboys. Given the substance of our comments, though, we've
definitely got quality over most videogame blogs' quantity.
As I just described, Leigh Alexander, Tom Chick, Chris Dahlen and I will be counting down our top 10 games of the year, along with our most overrated and most disappointing, for the next two weeks on this blog. At the end of the process, I'd also love to announce the Cut Scene readers' top games of the year (and possibly most overrated and/or disappointing, if y'all are into that as well).
Here's how it works: Leave a comment with your favorite videogames of the year. They can be console, mobile, Web, downloadable, whatever. Vote for up to 10. If you don't have 10, no worries. Anywhere between one and 10 is fine. If you're got an opinion about the most overrated (meaning it may have been good, but not as good as most reviewers and fans thought) and/or disappointing (not the absolute worst, but the worst compared to what the game could have and should have been), feel free to list up to three votes in each of those categories as well. No explanatations are necessary, though they are of course welcome.
Voting closes the night of January 5. Then I'll calculate the votes (assigning ten points for a #1 vote, 9 points for #2, etc.) and announce the winners. But only if we get a decent number of votes (ten or so, but hopefully a lot more). So make your voice heard, because I'm willing to bet that Cut Scene readers will have make more interesting choices than any of the enthusiast sites.

Banjo Kazooie - Nuts & Bolts
Best game of the year, by far. Unfortunately it has no guns with chainsaws attached and the death toll is very small, so very few will play it. Shame.
GTA IV, Civilization Revolution, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 are all great.
Overrated?
Mercenaries 2 (what a shame)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (mediocre gameplay is broken up by hours of nonsense cut scenes)

hm it may not have been released in 2008? mass effect is my favorite video game of all time... the original zelda and original metroid not too far behind

For someone that is so obviously trying to embrace being "different" by not listing Gears 2 in your top ten, I'm a little surprised that you are doing something as debasing as a top ten in the first place. Therefore, instead of participating in this plebian task, I decided to list my top ten favorite game titles of 2008:
AWAY Shuffle Dungeon
Age of Booty (wow was I excited when this hit the XBL marketplace. Until I discovered it was a game about pirates).
Air Traffic Chaos
Babysitting Mania
Animales De La Muerta
Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!
Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Released
The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai
Muslim Massacre: The Game of Modern Religious Genocide (no joke)
Personal Trainer: Walking (double wow)
The great thing about this list is that most of them actually deliver the title (with the exception of Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Released and the aforementioned Age of Booty). Here are some examples/references:
Animales De La Muerta - yes this a game where you get to play as Mexican heirs to a zoo developer and go around killing zombie zoo animals.
Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble! - the tagline is "This is the game where good girls get better by being bad!"
The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai - "Inspiration for The Dishwasher began in 2004 when James Silva was himself working as a dishwasher, and felt that the position earned too little respect. After pointing out to many people that Bruce Lee was a dishwasher, he began to envision a game about a dishwasher who "mercilessly slaughtered piles of extremely well trained evil minions".
Muslim Massacre - I'll let Wiki speak for itself. "Players control an American 'hero' armed with a pistol who has been parachuted into the Middle East. The player can also pick up special weapons such as a shotgun, a machinegun, hand grenades and a rocket laucher, supplied by an overflying plane. [6] To progress to the game's bosses: Osama Bin Laden, Mohammad and Allah,[3] the player must kill all the Muslims who appear on-screen during each stage, each of which lasts between 60 and 90 seconds.[4] Some Muslims are dressed as civilians while others are depicted as suicide vest wearing terrorists.[7]"

Dead Space (really under appreciated for the slickness of everything in it from the UI to graphics, gameplay etc)
Castle Crashers

Most over-rated; not bad games just did not deserve the hype/praise
Gears of War 2 (more of the same with bad storyline)
Fallout 3 (way too easy)
GTA 4 (takes itself too seriously)
FarCry 2 (sluggish & repetitive game play)
Disappointing
Resistance 2 (was expecting much better from Insomniac)
Civ4 Revolution (just a little too simplistic)
