The most overrated videogames of 2008
(Part of our series counting down the top ten videogames of 2008 -- with interruptions for the most disappointing and most overrated -- according to Variety critics Leigh Alexander, Tom Chick, Chris Dahlen and Ben Fritz. Full details are here. To check out the rest of the list, click here. Most importantly, vote for your favorite games of 2008 in the Cut Scene reader awards here.)
These are not games we thought were bad, or even disappointing. They're the videogames that Variety's critics found fell the shortest of what most other critics and/or the public thought. It also, interestingly, the only category in this whole process in which all four of us agree about a game.
Chris Dahlen
Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar / Rockstar North)
It’s a lie to say that sandbox games let the player “do anything they want”; they still have an underlying vision, as we saw in "Fallout 3." So what’s "GTA IV’s" vision? That the American Dream ain’t perfect? That consumerism infects our lives? That talk radio lies to us? This is dimestore cynicism. It’s easy to admire the parts – the drunk effects, the jazz fusion station, the consistently interesting mission design, the Ricky Gervais cameo, and the way the cars go so much faster when you hit the highlife. But the sum ain’t there.
LittleBigPlanet (Sony / Media Molecule)
Castle Crashers (The Behemoth)
It’s not like me to bash an indie. But "Castle Crashers’" single-player campaign was repetitive and undistinguished, and four-player co-op was good for maybe an hour – an hour that’s now better spent with "Left4Dead."
Ben Fritz
Fallout 3 ( Bethesda Softworks / Bethesda)
LittleBigPlanet (Sony / Media Molecule)
The ultimate problem with “LittleBigPlanet” is that it’s impressive, but nothing more. Wow, sackboy is cute. Damn, those level-building tools are remarkably easy to use. Holy cow, that user created level looks just like a working calculator / a lamborghini / “Duck Hunt” / “God of War.” But there’s nothing remotely engaging about the experience, unless you’re in that small minority with dozens of hours to kill and the desire to make an awesome platforming level.
Patapon (Sony / Sony)
The fact that you push four buttons to a beat and everything's really cute doesn't make up for the fact that this is a painfully simple RTS with absolutely no substance.
Leigh Alexander
Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo / Level 5)
Why are charming little animations an excuse to glorify the sort of dull school workbook designed expressly to validate Mensa wannabes?
LittleBigPlanet (Sony / Media Molecule)
It's adorable, I'm heartened by the vision behind it and couldn't be more impressed with Media Molecule and its beautiful execution. But at the end of the day, I'm a fan of video games because I want the professionals to make them for me. I don't want to make video games, I don't really care what my "friends from the Internet" have made, and I often wonder how many people really do care -- and how many people just leapt on board the bandwagon of positive sentiment surrounding an effort they admired.
Tom Chick
Grand Theft Auto IV (Rockstar / Rockstar North)
One of the most amazing realizations of a real-world-ish place and one of my favorite games this year. Also the setting for a poorly told
story and uninspired gameplay, and the subject of a system-shattering
PC port.
LittleBigPlanet (Sony / Media Molecule)
Awesome graphics! And those little sack people are so cute I could just eat them up! Now where's the game?
Braid (Number None)
This is not a game that moves and it's not very accessible. You need to have a stomach for old-school platformers and mental brick walls. Which is a shame, because the place Braid eventually goes is sublime.

What...No "Spore" on the list??? I bought the PC game, played it for a few nights, got into space, set up trade routes, battled bad guys in my self-created space ship, traded spice, made allies and enemies, and got bored with it after that.
Talk about HYPE! I have been a "gamer" since the Atari 2600...Ol' Skool represent! I can't think of any other game that had so much "hype" for so many years.
I gave up on consoles years ago, moved onto PC games, and never looked back. I don't do RPG or RTS, because I don't have enough free time to waste away in a virtual world.
I like mind numbing, short burst, frag and blast fun for my money, however I did pick up "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" last night, and so far so good...but yeah, EVERYONE in it has some friggin' puzzle to solve.
At least my 4 year old daughter enjoys watching the DS screen, while we chill on the couch, but then she also enjoys blasting bad guys in F.E.A.R. or BF2142. :D
Happy New Year! -Blister72

Seriously,
Not liking a particular videogame is not the equivalent of disgracing the art of gaming. People having different opinions than you do does disqualify them from sharing those opinions. Hell, I disagree with Roger Ebert's opinion at least half the time, but that doesn't mean he's a disgrace, and no one responds to his top 10 list by screaming about how he should be fired and he's not a TRUE movie guy because he doesn't have enough Estonian documentaries on his list, or whatever.
You see, people in other media can have diagreements without turning into a bunch of hysterical little bitches. That's why non-gamers tend to assume that all gamers are 13 years-old. This is why I always get blank looks from older people when I tell them I'm a gamer and try to explain why videogames are important.
I admit I only read Variety for the movie reviews, not the videogame reviews, so I personally don't know if these guys are legitimate game critics or not. And personally, I loved LBP. But the reaction this is getting is fucking retarded. If you can't have a conversation like adults, you don't get to sit at the grown-up table.
Posted by: jesus | January 06, 2009 at 12:04 AM
i agree with GTA IV but all the others are WAY off. LBP is one of the most underrated games of the year and probably the past few years. Castle Crashers has that corny humor but is a major blast with 4 people running around just having fun with the game... much like LBP.
Im going to assume that these writers dont play games on a regular basis or have any knowledge about the gaming industry. Im going to pretend that they just picked up a gaming magazine and found the most talked about games and called them overrated... that way they can use the "ignorance" card and say their editor in chief told them to do it. otherwise i will just have to read the mag even less than i already do... wait, i've never read this magazine before... no loss for me then
Posted by: TheLastJedi | January 05, 2009 at 10:23 PM
On LBP: the hype preceded it with what seems like right now a news story plant to get free press. It started with just a few days before the planned release that a "touchy" or "insensative" song was taken out and the press sort of followed it. Those people that got early copies from the developers either leaked or on torrentz found the game unchanged. Now aside from that, this is an opinion piece, not the end-all be-all of lists. Sure there will be different opinions but if you act like a d1ck over someone else's opinion, maybe you should not read anything at all and live under a rock.
Posted by: Tim | January 05, 2009 at 02:46 AM
I understand that you guys were expecting more from LITTLE BIG PLANET, but I think all of you didn't play the game enough. There's more to LBP than you think. At least next time you play look up "Azure Palace" in the online community.
Posted by: V.M.L. | January 04, 2009 at 12:28 PM
Just a note guys....there's ALWAYS going to be arguments over what different people thought about different games. If you ask 100 gamers for their "Most Overrated" list, you'd get 100 different answers. That's kind of the point of having different genres...something for everyone. You're virtually never going to have a game that appeals to 100% of the people who play it, not counting those who can't even be bothered to pick it up. Some people like RPGs, some people find them tedious. Others like puzzle games, some like shooters, etc.
Putting aside for a moment that Variety is traditionally a movie publication (for the most part), and that they more than likely hired reporters and put them on the gaming "beat", rather than hiring gamers as reporters, which most media outlets do, do you really care what some jokers thought was and wasn't overrated? If you liked the game, you liked it, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thought. This is an editorial, not a news article, and all these guys are doing is expressing their OPINION. All personal preference, and no fact whatsoever. Put down the flamethrowers and let these guys fade into obscurity, and keep playing your favorite games.
Posted by: Happy13178 | January 04, 2009 at 10:01 AM
i love gta beat all of them but the new one after 16 hrs or so i got bored tried of all the phone calls. and lbp i sold it after having it for a week don't get it at all not much of a game and not fun.saints row 2 was my fav game of 08 so over the top and just fun to play.
Posted by: shane | January 04, 2009 at 09:39 AM
I'm surprised no retail Xbox 360 exclusives were put on this list......oh wait, how silly of me, Xbox 360 exclusives are NEVER well reviewed by the critics.......i wonder why that is???
It's funny though, in all seriousness, that Gears Of War 2 didn't make this list. When it came out all the Microsoft fanboys were screaming "ZOMG - best graphics for sure!!!!111" and a couple of biased reviewers touted it the same......only to have dirt kicked in their mouths when the VGA's rolled around.......although most intelligent gamers knew that MGS4's graphics were at least 20x better right from the start.
Oh and then there was the 1001 glitches.....the ever - lasting matchmaking process, idiot story and so on and so forth. For a game that averaged a 93 on Metacritic, i'd say it's fairly overrated (Even if it wasn't as good as LBP, it's still overrated for a 360 game).

Blame NeoGAF for the comments being a disaster zone now.
Got a thread over there which garnered a lot of negative attention.
I swear, this is all so childish.
Posted by: Danakir | January 03, 2009 at 04:36 PM
I appreciate those of you who understand what "overrated" means -- as opposed to "worst" or even "disappointing. Keep in mind that many of these games, especially GTA IV and LBP, received absolutely stellar reviews, so to think they're anything less than stellar qualifies them as "overrated."
Also, I think those of you accusing us of Microsoft bias are going to be very surprised by our picks for #1 game of the year. Though I also suspect no amount of evidence could change your opinion at this point.
Oh, and to the person complaining that Tom is repeating some of the picks he made on his blog, when I asked him to contribute to this, I was well aware he was in the midst of a similar process on Fidgit. So any displeasure should be directed at me, not him.

Needed some attention, huh?
Who would care about Variety if you'd have praised this games?
The ****
Posted by: noobs | January 03, 2009 at 10:57 AM
Good list, pretty much agree with most of the complaints, 2008 was definitely a year of over-ratedness.
(well maybe not entirely Castle Crashers its single player was funny/charming but only playing through once)
The trolls below (probably one/two guys reposting over and over, smells like the SDF) fail to get that over rated doesn't meant "WORST GAME EVER!LOL" and are spewing fourth based on that misconception.
Posted by: Tom | January 03, 2009 at 10:43 AM
Wow. Seriously. Wow.
Chill out commenters. I'm not saying I fully agree with this, but did you even read the article!? Catch this part:
These are not games we thought were bad, or even disappointing. They're the videogames that Variety's critics found fell the shortest of what most other critics and/or the public thought.
Yes, these are all really good games. But I think the list is pretty spot on. GTA IV? Yeah, pretty good game. During development and pre-release everyone expected this to be something along the lines of "BEST GAME EVAR!!!!1" Simply put, it wasn't! Yeah, you may have rather liked a game but must of these on a whole couldn't live up to their (albeit probably a bit too lofty) expectations. Fallout 2 ROCKED. Therefore, Fallout 3 had to ROCK. Sure, it was good, but not quite on the same level of 2 by many accounts, and thus it didn't do what it was supposed to - blow the second out of the water.
Chill out guys.

Holy crap this comments section is a disaster area.
Sadly I sort of agree with the Professor Layton criticism...and I liked the game! It is just a bunch of puzzles, with a thinly tacked on narrative. In the end the story just kind of ends and that was disappointing. Also at least 75% of the puzzles are extremely old chestnuts - do I really have to solve Towers of Hanoi again? Or a slider puzzle? Or a liquids puzzle? And on and on...

I am too damn lazy to go on any longer, I've given this article more credit than it already deserves. In my opinion, Variety needs to sack EVERY LAST ONE OF ITS "game writers" who obviously don't know S**T about games at all. If these writers purposely put triple A titles in this list just to stir up controversy and drive more traffic to the site and hence make Variety more popular. Congratulations, I've finally heard of Variety for the first time in my life.
Now I know that I should never read anything that comes out of this site or any of its publications, because if every single writer is as mediocre as these 3 writers, this whole thing is just a waste of my time.
And I had to post this in 4 separate comments because Typepad thought I was a spambot since my comment was so long.
Posted by: spvn | January 03, 2009 at 05:37 AM
GTA IV? Seriously? No I mean SERIOUSLY?! HELLO? DID YOU ALL PLAY ANY OF THESE GAMES AT ALL. I agree the PC port was bad, but the console versions were nothing short of brilliant. As for the STUPID argument that a "sandbox game doesn't let a player do ANYTHING he wants", HELLO, HAVE YOU PLAYED GAMES OF THE PAST, WHERE EVERYTHING WAS LINEAR. OBVIOUSLY there's still a certain framework the game has that it wants the player to play, that's the whole point of a game, to tell a story while immersing the player in it. And a "poorly told story"? Seriously, with Niko Belic one of THE most likable bad guys in a video game? The brilliant voice acting, interesting characters?
Posted by: spvn | January 03, 2009 at 05:36 AM
Professor Layton and the Curious Village is overrated?! It's probably one of the most UNDERRATED games of the year. People hear it's just puzzle after puzzle and think it sucks. Have you all actually PLAYED the game? The game itself is charming in its own way, and the puzzles are all really interesting and fun to solve. THAT makes it overrated?! There was barely any hype about it at all? How could it possibly be overrated?!
The idea of Fallout 3 is PRECISELY its choices. The difference in choice you make can change the way you play the game. THAT's what's so fun about it. And it IS an RPG, obviously there's going to be slogging through stuff. Which RPG doesn't?! The difference with Fallout 3 is that in the midst of all this slogging, you actually choose HOW you go about playing the game. Everything from choices, to even how you want to play it in the first place (ie. shooter style or more RPGish).
Posted by: spvn | January 03, 2009 at 05:36 AM
Seriously. It seems like you all made this list after reading the back of game boxes. I don't even know where to begin disagreeing with you all. Usually I'd take the time to formulate a long, logical "rebuttal" of sorts to articles I disagree with, but this list is just SO bad that I won't even bother.
Braid is overrated because "it's not very accessible"?! and because "You need to have a stomach for old-school platformers and mental brick walls"?! You know you sound like a 10 year old kid who's complaining about a game that was just too hard for YOU.
Posted by: spvn | January 03, 2009 at 05:35 AM
Ben F,
As others have already pointed out, the bias by Variety's contributors towards Microsoft and Xbox360 is crystal clear. The reason for having so many Nintendo games listed is because it's a "toy" and therefore not a serious gaming machine. So that's okay.
"Coming Monday morning: The best videogame(s) of 2008"
What's the bet all four contributors name Gears of War 2. Man, this is getting too predictable. You'll probably throw a curve ball in there too and say Lips, despite the luke warm reception it got everywhere else.
(by the way, why is the S after videogame in brackets? Had you not decided how many MS games are worth that second brown envelope, yet? Or maybe you're unsure about the correct usage of plurals. That would certainly explain a lot...)
Posted by: Stephen J Sweeney | January 03, 2009 at 01:08 AM
Wow I really feel sorry for you guys.
LittleBigPlanet was the most engaged I've been in a game since summer. The platforming, while a bit aqward. was tough. And it offered a real challenge in collecting all the items in the story levels.
Not only that but finding other peoples content and seeing their levels and sack people is a blast as well.
It's about socialization. Obviously you lack in this department.
And oddly enough, I expected this judging by all the sony reviews you've given all year.
You lot ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
Posted by: dan davis | January 02, 2009 at 11:33 PM
Ben Fritz is clearly biased and being paid off by the jelly industry. He encourages the nadir of the amateur commentariat to claim that butter was not the hottest muffin spread of 2008, when it earned rave reviews from the pastry press and multiple Yummy Awards.
Pata-pata-pontificate.

Hey, Mr. Chick, do you realize that you gave the PC port of GTA4 a B for 1up? Where was mention of its 'system-shattering' quality?
You hacks do realize that when the goddamned game came out you were gushing about it nonstop? Mr. Chick was the only one with ANY caveats regarding the game, the rest of you morons were just lapping up Rockstar's sputum.
Posted by: obonicus | January 02, 2009 at 08:47 PM
I agree (to a degree) with your take on GTA IV, but your take on LBP suggests that none of you have actually played the game - did you know there are over 30 top-notch platforming levels (best 2.5D platforming I've seen) on the disk, which is more value (and entertainment) than most full-priced games these days. And then there are a good number of user-created levels that you can play and are really good fun. As most of the people who have played the game say, one of the really good parts about it is that you can have a really great time (with almost endless replay value) with the game and never create a level. Might be worth actually playing the game sometime lads ;).

totally right about GTA`s lame story was bored after 32% of the game. biggest dissapointment of the last 5 maybe 10 yrs of gaming.

HaHa, great job bunbun777. This Ben Fritz guy just got his ass pwned...if he even knows what that video game reference means....

bunbun77,
I say that Microsoft is an enormous company and virtually every firm in America does business with them in some ways. The fact that Microsoft's online portal is (or used to be? not sure if that's even still in place) one of numerous sites that syndicate Variety's content means nothing. We also use Windows and Outlook and Word in our offices. That's not remotely close to getting a check from Microsoft.
Furthermore, like any professional media company, we have a strict division between business and editorial. I don't know and don't care what they do.
Ironically, it was only a year ago that online fanboys were accusing Variety of being bought by Sony (http://nsidernews.com/mario-galaxy-review-is-the-worse-experience/). I'm sure we will allegedly favor Nintendo someday soon as well. Eventually, fans such as yourself will have to accept that the existence of opinions you don't agree with is not evidence of bias.

I agree 100% with Variety's assessments of Little Big Planet, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Fallout 3. They're all tedious. If I were 14 years old and had the entire summer with nothing to do, sure, I'd love these games. But I have less time than ever. I want a game that I can get into -- and out of -- immediately, that is expansive and immersive, without bogging you down with too many repetitive tasks. I have a tendency to want to just keep exploring and moving through the virtual world I'm in. That's why to me, 2007's Bioshock and Crackdown were successful -- I was always moving, and the sensory gratification of plowing forward and defeating enemies worked in tandem with the fantastically detailed worlds I was in.
And don't get me started on the Tony Hawk series. Am I the only one who enjoyed them more when they weren't trying to be realistic? Remember the first couple games where you caught fantastic big air, in wildly bizarre levels? Word to game designers: realism isn't all its cracked up to be.
Posted by: Mark Van Slyke | January 02, 2009 at 01:29 PM
Well, LittleBigPlanet, although cute and with its exciting moments, I admit, it's not adequate for busy people. Designing a GOOD, ORIGINAL level could take dozens of hours, and the tools are a bit too complex.
It's more likely addressed at people with TONS of spare time, and few other games to play.
Posted by: Benjamin Lopez | January 02, 2009 at 01:22 PM
Wow, I never knew Variety was that desperate for hits to their site. I think you guys lost all credibility, all the games you mentioned were the best games of 2008 and they deserve every bit of attention they got. If Nintendo dominates the top 10 for best games of 08 then we all know you guys are not TRUE gamers but gamers in disguise. This list is a disgrace to all things videogames.

LBP overrated? It's one of the funest games I have ever played. If anything, it's underrated.

Why does variety hate everything? I sometimes go on metacritic and variety is always the lowest review. Although it's very funny how ironic the name is.

What a well informed and inspired list of overated titles....
But then again, I was listed at number 2 in Variety's 'top ten list of underrated sarcastic comment writers' so what do I know?
Posted by: Pob | January 02, 2009 at 12:01 PM
I'm shocked by some of the comments. Because they don;t write for IGN or 1up or >insert less credible blog title here< means they can't have an opinion on games? These are exactly the type of individuals I want giving me their thoughts on games. Why? Look at the ad revenue driven Kotaku or Destructoid. These "gaming" blogs have done nothing but spread FUD and praise mediocrity, but because they only talk about games, that makes them more credible. GTFO.

Stephen,
If Microsoft sent us a check, they're probably pissed off at the value they got for their money. More mentions of Nintendo exclusives on our top 10 lists than Xbox 360; 360 exclusives Castle Crashers and Braid on our "most overrated" list; 360 exclusive Too Human on our most disappointing list; Gears of War 2 listed on only one of our top ten lists (and at number 9)... Need I go on?
My general point being, I welcome and encourage fans of LBP, or any other game we listed here, to air their disagreements. But please don't ascribe bad motives, especially when you haven't done the research.
-Ben Fritz
Posted by: Variety.com * | January 02, 2009 at 11:41 AM
I'd add Gears of War 2 and remove LBP. What I've played of LBP sure felt like a game. From MM levels to user-generated levels, it's an innovative title that's at least trying. Other than that, pretty good list. GTA IV was "ok", Fallout 3 is liked because of the name Fallout (nothing more), Braid was just obnoxious and Castle Crashers was a broken Golden Axe. Only not as fun or memorable.
Posted by: Action Bastard | January 02, 2009 at 11:30 AM
If you had any credibility (which I doubt) you just lost it all - right out the window.
Posted by: R C | January 02, 2009 at 11:28 AM
Variety is overrated. Yeah I said it. Variety is a group of people who have zero clue about games, and it's funny to read articles like this.
One last thing... way to be timely on this list by posting the day after the start of 2009. I think the other billions of real and wannabe gaming blogs beat you to this same article over a week ago. Maybe they knew the end of the year was coming, and you guys didn't?
Posted by: Phantom | January 02, 2009 at 11:23 AM
u guys need a better designer editor . no seriously is that how u put an article up? i cant figure out if thats the name of the game or the guy whos opinion u publishin. and then u expect us to read it? seriously!! i thot variety had some class..

Posted by: Stephen J Sweeney | January 02, 2009 at 11:10 AM
yea LBP is one of the best games i dont see how it is overhyped at all there are plenty of game hours in the levels that MM has made and then even more that people have made and most are pretty good and you dont have to make anything at all but that is also fun to do and everything is made more fun if you play with your friends
Posted by: Justin aka Dipchit02 | January 02, 2009 at 11:04 AM
Wow, your inclusion of LBP in this is a bit ridiculous... top it nicely. Even if you are completely disinterested in creating your own levels, there are thousands that are generated that you have access to for free. Many are very good. So, where is the game? If you can't find it, you aren't looking.
Most overrated blogs, well, thankfully no one gives this blog credibility, so I guess you guys don't have to worry.
