Word of the Day: Covermount

Thewhite In the good Ol' U.K., it is quite common to find CDs - often compilations - glued to the front of magazines or placed inside the publication, as Prince's new album will be on Sunday. They're called "covermounts" and can be as annoyingly bad as Mojo's recent all-covers version of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"  or as collectible as the seven-inch single of the White Stripes' "Rag & Bone" on the cover of a June NME.

NME has had 120,000 copies of the vinyl, featuring an etching by Jack White, pressed in France and the Czech Republic. Disc is fetching $10-$20 on eBay.

The Fat Man Gets the Tribute Treatment

Fatsdomino As tribute records go, the cast of musicians that Vanguard Records has lined up for its Fats Domino collection of covers is mighty impressive. Elton John sings "Blueberry Hill," Norah Jones tackles "My Blue Heaven" and Neil Young's busy "Walkin' to New Orleans" for the Sept. 25 release "Goin' Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino." Disc has also licensed John Lennon's version of "Ain't That a Shame" from his "Rock and Roll" album. Album proceeds will go toward buying musical instruments to be donated to New Orleans' public schools as well as rebuilding Domino's home and creating a community center in the Crescent City's Lower 9th Ward.

Kanye West's Feeling Stronger Every Day

Kw Kanye West exposes himself as a fan of of '80s new wave shades, the vocoder and boxer-briefs avec bulge in his video for "Stronger," a rare rap video that captures a performer in a  position of vulnerability. In West's case, he's a patient in a hospital in Japan - some of the storyline does indeed get lost in the translation - and one assumes he recovers from his mystery disease.

Key sample is Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and the hip-hop syncophants are already tagging him a genius for pushing his music into a realm he has not yet explored. It's no "Jesus Walks."

At Bonnaroo, Gregg Gillis, a.k.a. Girl Talk, took issue with the song, saying it sounded a bit too much like his sample-ridden music.

Prince and the Press Polarize Retailers

In the U.K., the Mail on Sunday will carry the new Prince CD, "Planet Earth," more than three weeks before it goes on sale. Knowing that the giveaway -- the Mail's circulation is about 2 million on Sunday -- will deeply affect retail, the Entertainment Retailers Assn. called the distribution pan "beggars belief" and "an insult to all record stores."
"The Artist Formerly Known as Prince should know that with behaviour like this he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores," said ERA co-chairman Paul Quirk. "And I say that to all the other artists who may be tempted to dally with the Mail on Sunday."
Prince was the one artist that SoundScan allowed to count his concert handouts as sales, thereby jacking up his totals on "Musicology" a few years ago.
The Guardian broke the story Friday.

Two Weeks of Eugene Chadbourne

Chadbourne Eugene Chadbourne, the eclectic experimental instrumentalist known in some circles for playing the electric rake, will deliver two weeks worth of performances at the Stone in New York City in the second half of August.

Tagged as Chadfest 2007 - in 2004 there was one in Kansas City - the John Zorn-overseen performance space refers to it as "two weeks of madness, horror, humor and political intrigue."

Fest opens with Chadbourne, Marc Ribot and Duck Baker doing an all guitar version of Zorn's 1978 game piece "Fencing." Aug. 29-31 will feature Chadbourne performing with Jimmy Carl Black, the original drummer in Frank Zappa's  Mothers of Invention. Banjoist Tony Trischka guests on the first night and other musicians are expected to join in on the set billed as the Jack and Jim Show.

The Jack and Jim Show will tour the Midwest and East Coast in September, including special Captain Beefhart tribute nights on the 14th and 15th at the Bohemian Ballroom in Detroit.

Led Zeppelin reunite for Ahmet?

Jonesplant We sticklers for accuracy realize there cannot be a true Led Zep reunion, but three of the four band members have apparently given the thumbs up to a London appearance at an Ahmet Ertegun tribute.  NME.com has its take. (You don't have to adjust your eyes: That's John Paul Jones on the left and Jimmy Page on the right).

Hellhound on Your Trail - for 26 miles, 385 yards

The inaugural Mississippi Blues Marathon will be run in Jackson, Miss., on  Jan. 5. Event organizers anticipate at least 1,000 runners from around the country coming to the area to participate in the race, which will also feature a half- marathon race.

There is no indication if the winner will have to sell their soul for the trophy, but if first place goes to a man named Johnson (we'll accept Robert or Tommy), then something's fishy.

Information will be posted at their website.

The band is trumpeter Johnny Coles, reedmen Dolphy and Clifford Jordan, pianists Jaki Byard and Dannie Richmond on drums. Brilliant stuff.

Imagine if Lou Pearlman had to live on 15% of the paltry sums that entertainers with pre-teen audiences pull in these days? He would have had to create more fake businesses to bilk Midwestern banks. A grand jury charged him with defrauding a bank out of $20 million.

Most Expensive McCartney Item on eBay: Denny Laine's Grammy for 'Band on the Run'

Grammy Feeling the McCartney Mania brought on in anticipation of tonight's show at Amoeba Records in Hollywood, it seemed like the right time to splurge on soemthing from Paul's past. Figuring a spin on eBay would generate some inetresting tidbits, I never thought I'd find this - a pop performances by a duo or group Grammy for "Band on the Run," arguably McCartney's finest solo album.

Listing figures the Grammy Award will fetch between $50,000 and $75,000 six days from now when the auction ends. Trophy was originally given to Denny Laine, the former Moody Blues front man who became guitarist-bassist-singer for Wings. he is spending the summer singing "Go Now" in Hippiefest, sharing the bill with balding longhairs the Turtles, Felix Cavaliere and the Zombies.

Paul McCartney to play Hollywood record store

If he's playing a store, why isn't it a Starbucks?
Paul McCartney's "surprise" performance in Los Angeles will be at Amoeba Records in Holllywood on Wednesday. Perf should begin around 7:30 p.m. McCartney has already given a "secret" show at a New York concert venue to support his new release "Memory Almost Full," which was released by Starbucks' label hear Music.
Word spread in the evening Monday and fans of the former Beatle began lining up at the record store at Hollywood and Cahuenga boulevards. Some of the folks in the line had flown in from Minnesota and elsewhere. Considering the number of guest lists that LA clubs need to maintain, this one could truly get out of hand -- if it will indeed exist.

Swinging with sinatra and smith

Keely Pat Boone cracked jokes, Gary LeMel and Jerry Sharell sang Sinatra and Keely Smith did her Vegas-bred showroom act at the second annual Society of Singers benefit concert Friday at the El Rey.
But the secret behind the acts was one Nelson Riddle, whose charts were being used by the Gregg Field Big Band that backed the two singers. The orchestra featured heavyweights such as Pete Christlieb, Bill Cunliffe,George Bohannon and Tom Scott, and  swung. wildly through the Ol' Blue Eyes material. Band then provided Smith with a wall of sound against which she suitably shined.

2 Men…A Woman and a Big Band raised funds for the org, which provides help for indigent singers  and awards scholarships to students pursuing an education in the vocal arts.

In the pic, its LeMel, president of Worldwide Music at Warner Bros.Pictures, on the left, Sharell,  president and CEO of the Society of Singers, Smith and Boone.

Columbia Records lets fans pick Dylan songs they already own for Dylan compilation

Dylan_marty "Dylan," a 51-track collection covering his entire recorded output, will be released Oct. 1 by Columbia Records. The track list has yet to be determined, but  the A&R folks behind this swear they will read submissions posted on www.dylan07.com.  (Please, no voting for "Ugliest Girl in the World.") But why would anyone wax on about a song they don't already own? Seeing as how this will duplicate his three volumes of greatest hits, one has to wonder if the packaging and the inclusion of "One Too Many Mornings," "High Water (for Charley Patton)" or "If Dogs Run Free" will be enough to generate significant sales. Site does include a trailer that is pretty impressive.

Rumors are flying that this won't be the only fall release from the Dylan archives.

PS Dylan starts his summer tour Friday in Atlantic City, N.J.

Hendrix at Devonshire Downs

Newport69poster June 21, 1969: Dad takes my brother and me all the way to Anaheim from Chatsworth to see an Angels game. We come home, via the 5, and exit at Devonshire and as we head west, the street is suddenly strewn with trash and there are people milling about everywhere. As a 10-year-old kid, I was a bit in awe and when I later learned that there had been a rock festival featuring Jimi Hendrix,  Marvin Gaye, Byrds and a gazillion other bands. Kevin Roderick recounts the fest on its 38th anniversary.

supper club shuttered

Gotham's Supper Club, where Bob Dylan recorded his edition of "Unplugged," has apparently closed its doors.

Interestingly, the folks at Bowery Presents, which announced their Brooklyn plans on Tuesday, plan to renovate a club in that same Westside midtown neighborhood, the former Exit, where they will present shows.

Kelly's world tour?

Kelly_03 Kelly Clarkson performed a seven-song show for Yahoo Music on Monday on the Fox lot that will be posted online around the time (Tuesday) her third album, "My December," is released. Clarkson did a wonderful ballad reading of "Because of You" and pretty much sang songs written from a  victim of love p.o.v. One hyperventilating fan's post actually encapsulated the night properly.

Clarkson did not make mention of the fact that her tour was canceled nor did she discuss what changes she might be making in the proposed set.

A day without internet radio

Back in 2002, Webcasters didn't like the fact that they would have to pay  fees to artists and labels so they went a day with no Webcasts. Now they don't like the fact that the royalty rates are going so up so they are shutting down again -- on Tuesday. KCRW in Santa Monica has decided to join this day of silence and planned a show that day for their airwaves in which Pandora, Yahoo, AccuRadio and others can talk about how the government is ruining their business and the Internet Radio Equality Act.

VH1 takes Clintons to Dark Side of the Moon

Rogerwaters A proposed set list: "Us and Them," "What Shall We Do Now" and, of course, "Have a Cigar."

Roger Waters will perform at the VH1 Save the Music Foundation's 10th anniversary gala honoring Bill and Hillary Clinton. Event, at which Mariah Carey, NAMM and org founder John Sykes will be honored, too, will be held Sept. 20 at Gotham's Lincoln Center. Jon Bon Jovi and John Mayer will also perform but they don't have song titles that work as double entendres.

The Clintons are being honored for supporting music education efforts over the last 10 years and for appearances in conjunction with the organization.

beatles 'love' turns 1

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison will join in a dedication ceremony to John Lennon and George Harrison at the Mirage in Las Vegas on June 26.

Ceremony falls on the one-year anniversary of the Cirque du Soleil show. (Loved the music, not so crazy about the show).

The score album, created by George and Giles Martin, and released in November, is still on the sales chart. It has sold 1.46 million copies.

Area 51: Tidbits from SoundScan's lower reaches

Duncan While Paul McCartney was able to keep his second week dip to under 34%, Marilyn Manson's "Eat Me Drink Me" dropped a precarious 65%, selling 31,000 copies and landing at No. 30. Chris Cornell's "Carry On" took a hefty spill (56%), dropping to No. 44 from No. 17, Nielsen SoundScan reported.

Some Tony Awards watchers proceeded straight to the record stores. The cast album for "Spring Awakening," the Tony winner with music by Duncan Sheik and Steven Slater, sold 9,000 copies to head into the charts at No. 96. The Decca release's cume is 63,000.

Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" enjoyed a 10% sales bump to stay at No. 10. Other top 50 acts enjoying minor sales bumps were Michael Buble, Carrie Underwood, Fergie, Taylor Swift, Nickelback, Tim McGraw, John Mayer.

journey's jukebox hero

"Don't Stop Believin','" the Journey tune that closed out the final episode of "The Sopranos," sold 41,000 downloads in the week that followed. Certainly some fast-fingered folk immediately went to iTunes after Tony made his selection on the jukebox in the diner, pushing the June 10 week's download tally up to 8,500. Look at it this way: Journey sold more downloads than Jennifer Lopez did when she appeared on "American Idol."
