Fender Beats Up a Guitar in Honor of Joe Strummer
The great Clash guitarist Joe Strummer has joined Muddy Waters and James Burton in the Fender guitar factory: The electric guitar manufacturer has released a Joe Strummer Telecaster, the first time the company has created an instrument in honor of a punk rock musician.
Designed with the guidance and support of the Strummer estate, the Tele features distressed “road-worn” treatment, a “Revolution Rock” engraved neckplate and a limited edition art customization kit. The guitar will be in stores this month and sell for about $900.
The Joe Strummer Telecaster is modeled after the ’66 Telecaster that Strummer played throughout most of his career with the Clash and the Mescaleros. It was a fairly
standard ’60s-era Telecaster that Strummer bought in 1975 for £120. Instrument had a three-color sunburst finish, but he had it sprayed with gray primer at a London auto shop, and then later added a coat of black paint. he would later add stencils, stickers and new paint jobs.
Artist Shepard Fairey collaborated on the guitar’s customization kit. Now if they'll just make a beat up Paul Simonon bass...
Announcement came on the heels of Gibson unveiling a John Lennon limited edition.
