Just saw Stevie at Greek tonight, 9/5. i give it a 6 out of 10. Many songs were from 70's albums and not recognizable. In the first 90 minutes, he talked and sang songs like too high, golden lady, visions, overjoyed, higher ground, my cherie amour, master blaster (jammin') and some songs that sounded like Santana music. At 9:30 up to 9:45pm, he sang ribbon in sky and got the women in the audience to sing. (wasted an extra 10minutes for what?? At 10:00 pm, a miss johnson got on stage and sang "When I fall in love, it will be forever." Her dad was a special friend of Stevie and his last wish (he died last week) was for his daughter to sing with Stevie at the Greek in LA.
Then at 10:30pm, just 20 minutes before he quit. He rushed 4 songs into 6 minutes: signed, sealed, delivered, lately, sir duke and 1 more pop Hit, and then superstition for a 5 minute set and then onto Just called to say i love you, but he stopped 30 seconds into it to introduced band and then talked about spirituality and then sang another Non-Pop-Hit song and left. Sure die hard fans and those who worship his feet loved it. But those of us who expected top hits, did not get them. Not played: lady in red, part-time lover, cash in face, happy birthday, for once in my life, you are sunshine of my life, isnt she lovely, that girl, do i do, skeletons, go home and Jungle Fever. There are many songs, for sure, but i paid 100.00 dollars and 12 dollar in fees. I have to work for a living, not him. Get a better set list next time. I won't be attending though.

The show at the greek was amazing. so what he talked. he is like 70. it was a special evening and i hope he comes back. great show. worth every penny

This concert was sold out. So some of us who "worship his feet" could not get a ticket. I would have LOVED to hear him sing every one of those songs!!! If you weren't a "die hard fan," you shouldn't have spent the $112 to go to the concert. Then those of us who truly appreciate Stevie Wonder and his spirituality could have enjoyed the show.

Mike

"Many songs were from 70's albums and not recognizable"

Then why did you go? At that money and you don't know his songs aside from the hits? These weren't obscure songs, even the non-singles were the most loved songs from his most loved albums. This was the greatest concert I've ever seen. The set list was better than I could have imagined.

Also, Lady in Red is not a Stevie Wonder song and he did play Sunshine and Isn't She Lovely. Jungle Fever? Please!

Stevie's just 57, not 70

Mike

I was lucky enough to see the show at Concord-Won tickets on KFOG!!The show pretty much blew me away.He played all the soulful funky stuff we all wanted to hear-That man has more soul in his pinky them most musicians could dream of having. If someone wanted to hear Jungle fever then they obviosly have no clue>come on man. Living for the city ,Sir Duke,I Wish,MAster Blaster Boogie On Reggae Woman,Superstitious>these are what its all about .. incredible!!Thanks Stevie!!

I too was @ The Greek to witness what, to me, was a near religious experience (and I'm an agnostic)

As a musician, Stevie lover aged 45, he played some of his most excellent material from his most popular albums

The audience were at fever-pitch for much of this amazing show

I'm surprised that the original poster managed to last the whole concert .... surely mama would be wanting to change his diapers! What utter tosh!

Posted by: Turner Haykes | September 07, 2007 at 03:50 PM

Geezer

Fever pitch?!? You gotta be joking right? The audience was pretty subdued for the entire show. I liked the show and Stevie sounds as good as ever, but the sing-alongs were a waste of time and the friend coming onstage wasted more Stevie-time. For electicity the Police blew this away and I wouldn't have called that electrifying either.

Good show, needed more classics and over-priced.

jimbo

Some are nitpicking and some obviously weren't even paying attention. You try and fit a very prolific 35 year career into 2:30 set. The show was great

Posted by: jimbo | September 08, 2007 at 02:08 PM

mike

Considering the average age (50?), the audience was very much into it. There were a smattering of stiffs with money to throw around who had no business being there- expecting a Detroit-era Motown review like he's Smokey Robinson or Martha Reeves. He is considered a giant because of his stunning string of albums from 1971 to 1980. That's his golden era and he was throwing red meat to his most devoted fans. There are plenty of Stevie songs I'm not up on, because his catalog is so big, but I knew every song aside from the two newer songs and most people around me seemed to as well. The crowd in general seemed to respond best to the oldest of the songs, but at least 60% of the audience followed every line.

No disrespect to the Police, but I've yet to meet someone truly knowledgeable of both that would hold The Police in the same regard as Stevie Wonder, either in terms of strength of catalog, songwriting, musicianship or as a singer. There's no contest here.

The Police...I agree. Sting... then you have a BIG contest. However I wasn't comparing careers, I was comparing concerts. Concerts of a particular star vary from year to year... they are not ALL great! This was a good Stevie Wonder concert... nothing more. To say the audience was "Fever Pitch" is totally nuts and I'm saying the Police concert was closer to that level (yet still far from it). This was not the event of the summer but I enjoyed every minute of it.

Still looking for the compete Chicago Set List... it was long and had to be 25+ songs with the medley...

Jesse Jackson on stage(who can't dance) for the last song which was Happy Birthday...

6 years after 9/11 it was a crystal clear night (after the show was wash out the night before), with the exact same weather of that day.

Being on the Chiago Lake Front with the skyline in the back ground made for a wonderful evening... Doo, wha, doooo...

Just off the top of my head, some songs missing from the Chicago setlist are:

Visions (which included an awesome anti-hate rant)
Isn't She Lovely (during which Aisha sat next to him at the piano, beaming)
These Three Words
Higher Ground
All I Do

It was a spectacular show -- one of the best of my life. I'd love to get a complete setlist, too!

Oh, he also played Ma Cherie Amore, which he said he wrote to court a girl (Marcia) he met while in Chicago. :-)

Stuart R Downey

At 48 years old and an avid concert goer of hundreds of concerts, Stevie Wonder at Chastain Park in Atlanta Sept. 14, 07 was possibly the best concert I have witnessed. And that's pretty bold compared to Wings over America 1976 tour, etc. If I picked out a set list, it would have basically been what Stevie performed although my choices would have been an eight hour show. As a matter of fact, Stevie picked some gems like Too High, Golden Lady, Rocket Love, All I Do, (which I drunk dialed my ex-girlfriend during) and simply played the best from his best albums. India Arie joined for a song as well as his daughter. Chastain Park is a premier venue in America and it went crazy! It was one of those shows where people are still hollering about it as they walk away, down the streets to their cars. Wow! I saw David Bowie there the week before his heart attack and it was off-the-chain; Stevie edged Bowie out to top the Chastain list!

Beth

The Atlanta show was beyond brilliant. I think this is the correct setlist:

Love's in Need of Love Today
Too High
Visions
Living in the City
Master Blaster (Jammin’)
Higher Ground
Golden Lady
Ribbon in the Sky (with India.Arie)
Overjoyed
Can’t Imagine Love Without You
Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing
You and I
Lately
How Will I Know (with Aisha Morris)
Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Signed, Sealed, Delivered: The Country Version
My Cheri Amour
All I Do (Is Think About You)
Rocket Love
Sir Duke
I Wish
Boogie on Reggae Woman
Always
Isn't She Lovely
You Are the Sunshine of My Life
Superstition
Part-time Lover
I Just Called to Say I Love You
Another Star

Kenney (Baltimore)

Saw the musical genius in Baltimore last night and he is the absolute truth. Here's something that I didn't read from the other post. Singing "Do I Do", crowd rocking, band flowing, Stevie stood on top of his piano and did the bump and grind singing "Yes I pretty kisses for your lips....". Wonder was wonderful.

Posted by: Kenney (Baltimore) | September 17, 2007 at 10:14 AM

Kevin (DC)

Seeing Stevie in Baltimore last night was AMAZING. It seems that he is mixing up the set list a bit from show to show (yeah As!, boo no Boogie) but his audience chatter is pretty much the same- praise God, end the war, mean spirited people can go to hell. One thing he did say last night, that took me by surprise was his desire to do two more shows in Baltimore- one free and one for fee. Anyone know if he has said this in other cities, and what are the chances of that happening? Maybe since Sunday was proclaimed Stevie Wonder day in MD and he received commendations from the B'more mayor and the MD Black Caucus he was just on a high.

If anyone caught a set list from the B'more show please post it here! Thanks!
