Ray Charles in Charge? Not This Musical
One of Ray Charles' former lovers, who sued his estate to receive a 20-fold increase in child support for her 17-year-old son, is up in arms over the Charles bio-tuner that opened this weekend at the Pasadena Playhouse.
Mary Anne den Bok's son was the 12th of Charles' children. She says she's representing 10 of his kids in writing to the Pasadena Playhouse board of directors objecting to the depiction of the singer and his family in the musical "Ray Charles Live."
Den Bok takes issue with the book by Suzan Lori-Parks, particularly the depiction of Charles' meeting with the Queen of England, and "the cheapness of the sets and production."
"Ray Charles, in this production, is a one dimensional character whose womanizing takes precedence over all else," she writes.
"When Mr. Charles’ painstakingly worked with the writers of the movie 'Ray,' he did not shy away from the issues of drugs and women," her letter states. "Ray Charles would never, however, have authorized the public depiction, on stage, of Ray Charles in a tacky, sexual encounter."
Charles was married twice and had children with eight women.
Variety, though, thought the show was pretty sharp.
