Tom Petty To Play Super Bowl Halftime Show
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be the star attraction at Super Bowl XLII in 2008.
Petty will perform the halftime show at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Feb. 3. Fox made the announcement in its pregame show Sunday.
Petty has a tough act to follow in Prince, who delivered spectacular set at this year's NFL championship game, performing classics in the rain. Petty won't have weather to contend with as the stadium is domed. Petty's music was used last season by the NBA during its playoffs.
If any teams besides the Dallas Cowboys or the New England Patriots are in the game, he should definitely open with "You Got Lucky."
Petty and the Heartbreakers represent yet another classic choice for the NFL, which was burned when it attempted to get contemporary with Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. Since "nipple-gate," the NFL has gone with performers with lengthy and established careers who will perform catalog hits rather than attempt to introduce songs that are about to be released.

Your memory must be poor. Janet Jackson is a performer with a lengthy and established career, and she did perform catalog hits rather than songs that were about to be released. Yes, she made herself look like a fool but don't blame it one her being a newbie. By that time, she had been in the business 30 years.

Bruce Springsteen would by far be the best choice!

This year's Superbowl Halftime show will be sponsored by Bridgestone, a company which owns a rubber plantation in Liberia that is characterized by child labor, abuse of workers' rights and environmental destruction. American Girl will be the final...Betin on Runnin Down a Dream too...Won't Back Down?...Or will he bring out Stevie Nicks for Stop Draging My Heart Around? How bout a Willbury's song with footage of Roy Orbison on the big screen singing his duet part in Lonely?
Does he have the balls to do Roll Another Joint?

First song is American Girl. Last is Runnin' Down a Dream.

They usually perform three songs so I am going to bet he does an old song, his most famous song and a new song (he just released his tour dates this week...nice timing). My prediction is new song (Saving Grace), old song, (American Girl), and most famous song (Free Falling).

Hey everyone. I used to be Tom Petty's hair stylist. He now is so bald, that he wears a fairly realistic "hippie wig".... When I was doing
his hair, he would fall asleep in his chair, and sing out loud....now, he just slips that wig on. He also tapes a sausage to the inside of his pants leg.....and has really really bad breath.....and a rare foot disease.

I could care less what Petty looks like. Only thing I care about is the music and he doesn't fake that!! He's the best superbowl act EVER!!

Tom Petty is a nice guy. His music hardly qualifies him to be a super-star. His music is shallow and boring. I just watched the half-time session. He sung about an american girl and at the end said God Bless america. Guess he said what the powers in control wanted him to...

What di Tom Petty get paid for his performance at Super Bowl XLII

I was thinking the same question. What amount did they pay his band?
I thought considering the time limit he did very well.
Complete Tom Petty concerts can last for hours and even go into overtime. The music is very different then the Super Bowl.
My hope for a Giant win was great!
