Decemberists Leader Thinking Broadway
Colin Meloy, who fronts the Decemberists, is the latest composer from the rock 'n' roll world looking to go legit. Tom Hulce, the producer of "Spring Awakening," spoke at a CMJ panel Thursday and noted that he had met with Meloy in Portland. No details just yet.

Stu of the Negro Problem certainly found it to his liking. Most Rock songwriters (besides clowns like Ryan Adams and John Mayer) can write circles around the overtly "broadway" musical songwriters. The days of Lerner and Lowe are gone, and Stephen Merrit should have three musicals running concurrently. An Indie Rock writer looks at his competition and is humbled, he goes to a new broadway show and is amazed how low quality the songs are. Baby Lemonade on a bad day is better than any of the drivel in Wicked. All that stuff has going for it is a great concept, staging and repetition. Spring Awakening is the first time lately I actually heard "songs" from a musical that were memorable on the FIRST time around. The old "hum them on the way to your car" criteria. Duncan Sheik is cool, but he's way far down the pecking order of great rock songwriters. The competition just sux on the great white-bland-warmed-over R&B way ...
