Cher in Las Vegas: The Target Audience, Show Dates And, Of Course, The Set List
Here’s the deal with Cher and her Las Vegas residency: It’s the right show for her older fans who long for the ‘60s or ‘80s, somehow acquired a copy of “Believe” and have not been interested in schlepping down tot he local arena to see her over the last decade and half. It is not a show for people who do not want to revel in nostalgia, and whose attraction to the singer is based on the flamboyance, the dance tracks and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
Technically – and especially visually – it’s a stunner. Staging, video projections and choreography make it such a pleasing piece of eye candy. She sounds fine but she really does not sing much; you have to wonder if she is singing on “Believe” at all as it includes all the computer tweaks and has a one that's nothing like the rest of the program. For anyone who caught the Farewell Tour, the set list is nearly identical.
It is popular. Two hours before curtain, the line for cancellations was already 50 people long. (Seating is 4,296). The theater is not an easy one to get into – only four entrances and banks of slot machines where orderly lines should be – so it was tough to tell if anyone got in or if that line had grown.
Anyhow, Cher resumes her residency Aug. 6, performing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends through Oct. 5. As currently scheduled, Cher’s tally for the year will be 50 shows.
The Variety review is here. The set list, on May 31, was:
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For / Laverne video / Love is a Battlefield / It’s the Little Things (video) / The Beat Goes On / All Really Want to Do / Half-Breed / Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves>Dark Lady / Love to Love You Baby>I Feel Love>YMCA (band & back singers) / Don’t Leave Me This Way>Take Me Home / Sunny (video) / I Got You Babe (video) / The Way of Love / After All / Walking in Memphis / Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss) / Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I do (video) / Strong Enough / If I Could Turn Back Time / Believe
