Petty Fans Prompted By Super Bowl Slow to Scoop Up Tickets

Pettysuperbowl The Super Bowl ad that did not actually get to plug its product, the appearance by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, has not generated gangbuster business the day after.
Petty's appearance, like any other musician or actor who showed up to the game, was to get fans to make purchases, in his case concert tickets. Tickets went on sale today about three hours ago in many cities; that fact was never mentioned on air nor in any Petty advertisements. (Nice full page in the New York Times, though).
Clearly, though, fans are either not putting one and one together or they simply don't want to lock in plans for a night in July or August. Petty is selling tickets seven months out to people in Texas and Washington; his first show is May 30 - nearly four months from the on-sale date.
A quick perusal of Ticketmaster offerings nearly three hours into the sale found tickets about half way up in the Hollywood Bowl, far stage right on the second level at Irvine Meadows in Orange County and in the 300 level at Madison Square Garden where the view will be Benmont Tench's side and Steve Ferrone's back. Maybe there are a lot of Giants fans figuring Petty brought the team luck and are therefor scooping up ducats faster than the rest of the country.
Tour opener in Grand Rapids, Mich., had side of the stage seats available and night two, in Auburn Hills outside Detroit, had second level straight back available.

Tom Petty's Super Bowl Gig Becomes An Ad For His Summer Tour

Tompetty A few friends started debating last week about what might be included in Tom Petty's set  during halftime at the Super Bowl and most of us figured "Running Down a Dream" and "Free Fallin'" were locks until a rumor spread that he's working on  new material.
That certainly threw a wrench into any plans for song pool. Naturally, the discussion turned toward: Is there a Petty album on the horizon that no one knows anything about? Well, right now, no. But there is a tour.
Petty and the Heartbreakers play Sunday in Arizona; tickets for his summer tour go on sale the next day. Steve Winwood will be opening the shows, which start May 30 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Tour dates after the jump

Jonas Brothers Start Selling Out Shows: Let the Scalping Begin

Jonas Moms, Dads: If you thought the crying was unbearable when little Samantha or Ashley was told there was no way to get Miley Cyrus concert tickets, well hold on.
Turns out the Jonas Brothers can sell ducats at potentially an even faster rate. In L.A., the Jonas Brothers set a new record for the fastest sell-out in the 36-year history of the Gibson, formerly Universal, Amphitheater. Two minutes. More than 5,000 seats sold.
The band immediately added two more shows and sold every ticket again. And this is in a  town where many parents can tell their kids "I know a guy who knows a guy who can hook us up" and not the Midwest where the Cyrus dust-up originated.
But if you think that sell out was fast, how about the 203 postings that went up today on StubHub for the Jonas Brothers' Universal shows. Ducats are running from $69.95 apiece to $858 a ticket for four seats in the fourth row.   Face value is $49.50 for the orchestra; $39.50 for the mezzanine. Then there are the 130 listings on eBay, including one that started at one dollar from the private party known as Mr. Best Available Seating.
Dates for the teens 'n' ticket scalping extravaganza after the jump:

Clapton, Winwood Find Their Way Home ... To New York

Winwood With no word on what plans Ginger Baker has at the end of February,  Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton will perform Feb. 25, 26 and 28 at Madison Square Garden, their first official concerts together in nearly 39 years.  Tickets are being sold first to American Express cardholders, beginning Nov. 12.
The two musicians worked together in Blind Faith - a "supergroup" featuring two members each of Traffic and Cream - and appeared together at the Chicago Crossroads Guitar Festival in July.
In the decades since Blind Faith's lone release, "Had to Cry Today" has never received its proper due as one of Winwood's finest hours. Meanwhile, the 15 minute "Do What You Like" has moved from horrid space filler to significant jam.
Blind Faith went on one tour. It started July 12, 1969 at Madison Square Garden and ended Aug. 24 in Hawaii.
Winwood and Clapton have not yet discussed the set list for the shows - that will be worked out in upcoming rehearsals.
Winwood's last album was initially recorded for the String Cheese Incident's SCI Fi label and then picked up by Sony Music. His next disc will be released by Sony's Columbia Records  in early 2008.  Clapton recently published his autobiography and a companion CD, "Complete Clapton," was released by Warner Music's Reprise.
Their performance at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago is part of  a 2-disc DVD available Nov. 20 from Rhino Entertainment.

Slash Plays Sales Clerk And Guitar Hero

Best Buy will put the guitarist to the test this weekend when he is scheduled to ring up the first customer in line purchasing a copy of Guitar Hero III at the Best Buy in West L.A. No word on whether there is any special discount if the customer can play "What Do You Want to Be" or any other Snakepit classics.
The Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock party at the Pico Boulevard Best Buy will feature DJ sets by Joel Madden of Good Charlotte and a performance by Poison.

Attack of the B-52's Resumes In L.A.

B52Can you still scream "Tin Roof"? How about lowering your body to the floor during the "down, down, down" portion of "Rock Lobster"? Remember when "Private Idaho" referenced only a song and a state of mind and not a crappy movie?
Those days good old days, which actually span from the late '70s to well into the '90s,  are abut to return.
The B-52's will perform material being recorded for their first album in 16 years at a show Nov. 16 at the Roxy in Los Angeles. Tickets go on sale Thursday.

Garth in KC: And Then There Were Nine

Garth Garth Brooks pledged to do a single show in Kansas City, Mo., as a thank you to Wal-Mart for lining his coffers   with the repackaging of his catalog. Show, at KC's  brand new Sprint Center where a Miley Cyrus concert on-sale turned into political grandstanding, went on sale Saturday. One hour, 58 minutes later, Brooks had sold out nine shows. Tickets were $32.50.
The immediate aftermarket reveals only 147 tickets being posted on Stubhub with one clown believing a pair on the floor is worth $10,000. Another site has ducats running from $101 up to a little over a grand. The same site has 254 listings of between two and seven tickets for the Cyrus show, most of them priced right about $200 apiece. Show at Staples Center in Los Angeles has some ridiculous offers, including a single seat in a third-level suite for nearly 10 grand.

Lucinda In Concert: 10 Nights, Five albums

Lucinda Lucinda Williams is joining the trend of devoting a concert to a single album, except that she has loaded up pratically the entire catalog.
Williams will play five nights at L.A.'s El Rey and follow it up with five in New York, two at Irving Plaza and  three shows at Manhattan’s Town Hall
Each show will be dedicated to a single album followed by a set of music from her latest disc "West."
The albums she'll be performing are: her 1988 self-titled disc, "Sweet Old World," "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road," "Essence" and "World Without Tears."
Williams will perform the albums in reverse chronological order; first night in each city, therefore, gets "World Without Tears."
Williams will play the El Rey Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10; Irving Plaza on Sept. 29 and 30, and Town Hall on Oct. 2, 3 and 4. Tickets for the shows go on sale Saturday.

Wiltern welcomes winehouse

Amy Speaking strictly as a fan, Amy Winehouse has made the best album of the year based on one criterion: Listenability. In an age when so few records can be played front to back a handful of times, Winehouse's debut stands up to repeated listening with no skipping of tracks. At SXSW in March, she proved her mettle performing with the fine Brooklyn band the Dap-Kings behind her at night and with just a guitarist during the day. The boys over at Hits are equally impressed with her.
