Set List: Janis Ian, England 2006

Janisian "At Seventeen," the song Celine Dion sang gently Wednesday night, keeping her powerful pipes in check, was penned by Janis Ian, a singer who has maintained  a loyal following in the three decades since the song was a significant hit. Earlier this year, Ian's autobiography "Society's Child" was published by Tarcher/Penguin, but Wednesday was a remindeer of the gracious and artful nature of "At Seventeen."
Ian has led quite distinct life. In the book she discusses her family being watched by the FBI, he first hit at the age of 15, "Society's Child,"  snorting coke with Jimi Hendrix, watching Nina Simone  pull a gun on a sales clerk in a shoe store,  surviving an abusive marriage, being outed as a lesbian by the Village Voice in the early '70's and playing the first "Saturday Night Live."
A companion double CD, "Best Of Janis Ian: The Autobiography  Collection" was released on her  own Rude Girl Records. Ian also gives away music on her website and has been an assertive user of the Internet for a decade.
Ian is off the road until March.  Once she resumes playing clubs and theaters, she will also offer her Living Room Concerts in which a few times each year she performs for a gathering in a home. (The concerts cost $14,999 and many are used as fundraisers for her Pearl Foundation).
One such show took place in the south of England on April 16, 2006 - Easter Sunday. She played:

Every Love / Danger Danger / Tattoo / The Crocodile Song / Silly Habits / Watercolors / Folk is the New Black / Jackie Skates / At Seventeen / Page Nine / Stars / Through the Years / Joy

Set List: Madonna, East Rutherford, N.J. 2008

Madonna02
Madonna opened the U.S. leg of her "Sticky and Sweet Tour" Saturday night at the Izod Center at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. David Sprague reports: Madge leaned surprisingly heavily on material from “Hard Candy,” but did a fine job of cherry-picking her hits. “Borderline” was chopped and channeled into post-modern form via the interpolation of a metallic guitar line. She injected a similar intensity into “Ray of Light,” which had a decidedly more rock edge than in its original incarnation. About the only time she offered the audience a breather was during a breathily pretty rendition of the “You Must Love Me” from "Evita." Madonna did not seem as interested in displaying her breadth of scope as her depth of energy. Performance h closed with a one-two salvo of “Hung Up” and “Give It 2 Me” that had the same force as the opening songs.
The set list:Madonna03_2

Candy Shop / Beat Goes on / Human Nature / Vogue / Into the Groove / Heartbeat /
Borderline / She's Not Me / Music / Devil Wouldn't Recognize You / Spanish Lesson / Miles Away / La Isla Bonita / You Must Love Me / Like a Prayer / Ray of Light / Hung Up / Give It 2 Me

Set List: Janet Jackson, Vancouver, B.C. 2008

Janetjackson Janet Jackson opened her 2008 North America tour Wednesday at the GM Palace in Vancouver.
The Vancouver Sun's reviewer was awestruck, reporting that the show "is a reminder that she is a trend-setter in her own right, a true diva, and a marvelous performer."
The Globe and Mail was overall impressed, however, "too much of the vocal performance was pre-recorded and played back as Jackson either sang along or added the odd 'come on!' or 'woo!'”

Alright / Miss You Much / Rhythm Nation - Interlude / Never Letchu Go / Come Back To Me /

Set List: John Pizzarelli & Jessica Molaskey, Hollywood 2008

Johnpizzarelli During an interview for my weekly column in Daily Variety, guitarist-singer John Pizzarelli did not explain he and wife Jessica Molaskey would be creating rounds out of two different songs throughout their set. Beyond the fun and playful, they hit a serious note by combing the "South Pacific" tune on racism "You've Got to  Be Carefully Taught" and "Children Will Listen" from "Into the Woods," a darker and jazzier take than Barbra Streisand's medley of the songs.  They take their act to the Cafe Carlyle on Sept. 9 for a two-month run.
At the early show on Aug. 29 at Catalina Bar & Grill, John & Jessica performed:
I Didn't Know What Time it Was (Jessica)> Just in Time (John)/My Baby Just Cares About Me / Small World / I Want to Be Happy / Meditation (John) > Summer, Highland Falls (Jessica) / Happy Talk / This Can't Be Love / It's Easy to Remember / Johnny One Note  / I'm Just Wild About Harry >Everybody Loves Louis / Hide in Plain Sight (that's a guess) / You've Got to Be Carefully Taught (John) > Children Will Listen (Jessica) / You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You / Little Girl

Radiohead setlist: Hollywood Bowl, Night Two

Radioheadplanet

posted by Stuart Oldham

Radiohead completed their two-night residency at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday with a dazzling two and half hour set, which featured signature tracks from "In Rainbows," their latest album, as well as a Neil Young cover ("Tell Me Why") and hits from "The Bends" and "OK Computer."

Lead-singer Thom Yorke was in good spirits throughout the night, dancing on stage in bright red pants and telling the audience at one point: "Hello in the way back! We're the tiny people on stage. Especially me!"

The second encore began with Yorke fumbling "Cymbal Rush" by himself on piano (He stopped mid-way through with a chuckle and advised the audience to "Shhhhh!" before completing the song.) The rest of the band (Ed O'Brien, Phil Selway, Colin Greenwood and Jonny Greenwood) then joined for fan-favorites "Karma Police" and "Idioteque" to close out the show.

The Liars, local art-rockers from Los Angeles, opened the concert with a tapered 30-minute set.

Radiohead plays San Diego on Wednesday night before heading to the Santa Barbara Bowl on Thursday for the final stop of their current U.S. Tour.

Full set list:

Reckoner/Optimistic/There There/15 Step/All I Need/Pyramid Song/Weird Fishes/Arpeggi/The Gloaming/Videotape/Talk Show Host/Faust Arp/Tell Me Why*/No Surprises/Jigsaw Falling Into Place/The Bends/The National Anthem/Nude/Bodysnatchers/Encore: House of Cards/Planet Telex/Go Slowly/Fake Plastic Trees/True Love Waits Intro/Everything In Its Right Place** Encore 2: Cymbal Rush/Karma Police/Idioteque

* = Neil Young cover featuring Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke on acoustic guitars

Set List: Glen Campbell, West Hollywood 2008

Glencampbelllive Glen Campbell sounded as good live as he does on "Meet Glen Campbell," his return to Capitol Records after a 27-year absence. To celebrate Tuesday's release of the album,Campbell performed at the Troubadour in West Hollywood with an expanded band that included a fair number of contemporary rock musicians, among them Roger Joseph Manning Jr. of Jellyfish.
He has a exceptional command of Travis' "Sing," Tom Petty's "Walls" and the Replacements’ "Sadly Beautiful"; his live rendition of "Jesus" was revelatory, far outdistancing the recorded version.
Conversely, John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me" and Green Day's "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" are not yet striking the proper emotional chords.
The set played by Glen and his 11 piece band was:
All I Want Is You (U2) / Sing (Travis) / Angel Dream (Tom Petty) / By the Time I Get to Phoenix / Walls (Tom Petty) / Galveston / Jesus (Velvet Underground) / Gentle on My Mind / Sadly Beautiful (Replacements) / Good Riddance (Time of Your Life (Green Day) / Wichita Lineman / Grow Old With Me (John Lennon) / Rhinestone Cowboy / Times Like These (Foo Fighters)

Set List: Ray Davies, Anaheim, Calif., 2008

Posted by Matt Kivel

Raydavies A semi-circle of acoustic guitars surrounded Ray Davies as he took to the stage  with side-guitarist Bill Shanley. The pair plowed through a number of early Kinks tunes, with Shanley improvising loosely. Unfortunately, Shanley’s busy blues solos and subtle harmonies only seemed to distract from the lyrics and core melodies.
There weren’t too many musical surprises — aside from the 1965 raga-inflected“See My Friends” and a brief snippet of the ebullient “Have a Cuppa Tea” — but  Davies’ feistiness and unrelenting sense of humor kept the crowd’s attention and illicited a good deal of participation throughout the evening.
At the Grove Tuesday, Davies performed:

I Need You / Where Have all the Good Times Gone / Till the End of the Day / After the Fall / I’m Not Like Everybody Else / The Tourist / Dedicated Follower of Fashion / Sunny Afternoon / Dead End Street / Ape Man / The Working Man’s Café / The Morphine Song / Hymn For a New Age / Vietnam Cowboys / A Well Respected Man / See My Friends / 20th Century Man / Celluloid Heroes / Tired of Waiting For You / Set Me Free / All Day and All of the Night / Days / Lola

Set List: Coldplay, Los Angeles 2008

Chrismartin Coldplay played the first official gig of their 2008 tour on July 14 at the Forum in Inglewood. The minimal stage show had a few cool effects: A large ball hanging at about mid-court contained live video images of the band; a giant backdrop switched late in the show from the "Viva la Vida" album cover to b&w live footage of the band; and a gazillion pieces of confetti shaped like butterflies filled the air for what seemed like  five minutes. (Photo is from the free London show; Chris Martin wore the same outfit at the Forum).
A couple of songs were done at the end of a ramp in the middle of the crowd jutting out from stage left. But the best moment was when the band ran from the stage into the farthest aisle in the Forum and performed "Yellow." Material is lacking cohesion and early on it feels like a hit parade; they need to experiment with the set list a bit. The review is here. On Monday they played ("Chinese Sleep Chant" is a guess):

Life in Technicolor / Violet Hill / Clocks / In My Place / Viva la Vida /  42 / Yes / The Scientist / Chinese Sleep Chant / God Put a Smile Upon Your Face / Square One / Speed of Sound / Trouble / Lost / Strawberry Swing / Yellow / Death Will Never Conquer / I'll Fix You / Lovers in Japan > Reign of Love / Death and All His Friends

Set List: Stevie Wonder, Los Angeles 2008

Posted by Andrew BarkerSteviewonder

Opening with a four song block from his 1980 LP "Hotter Than July," Stevie Wonder kept things seasonally appropriate Monday night. Backed by an ultra-proficient band (at times almost too proficient, leaning toward fusion when they should have been bringing the funk), Stevie was in near-perfect form throughout, even keeping his legendarily discursive stage banter snappy.
Among the revelations: Stevie has two records in the works (one a tribute to his late mother, "The Gospel Inspired by Lula"), he still supports Barack Obama, and his twentysomething son isn't above using "Ribbon in the Sky" to try to get fresh with the ladies.
At the Hollywood Bowl Monday he performed:
As If You Read My Mind / Master Blaster (Jammin’) / All I Do / Rocket Love / Knocks Me Off My Feet / (Jam) / Higher Ground / Spain (band solos) / Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing / If It’s Magic / Living for the City / Golden Lady / Keep Fooling Yourself Baby Girl (new song) / I’m Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life (sung by Aisha Morris) / Isn't She Lovely / Ribbon in the Sky / Overjoyed / My Cherie Amour / Signed, Sealed, Delivered / Sir Duke / I Wish / Do I Do / You Are the Sunshine of My Life / I Just Called to Say I Love You / Superstition

Set List: Tom Waits, Phoenix 2008

Tomwaits On a day that was 110 degrees, Tom Waits opened his world tour Tuesday in Phoenix at the 1,364-seat Orpheum Theater with an excellent two-hour set. It has been, apparently, 30 years since he played Arizona's largest city; it's his first full-scale tour in eight years.
Perhaps not surprising, the best represented album in the set was "Mule Variations," the 1999 album that was supported by something of a comeback tour. (He also toured in 2006). On June 17, the first of two nights in Phoenix, Waits and his band, which featured his son Casey and jazz saxophonist Vincent Henry, played:

Lucinda / Hoist That Rag / Come On Up to the House / Jesus Gonna Be Here / November / Black Market Baby / Rain Dogs / Trampled Rose / Goin Out West / Murder in the Red Barn / Anywhere I Lay My Head / Cemetery Polka / Get Behind the Mule / The Eyeball Kid / Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis / Picture in a Frame / Invitation to the Blues / Innocent When You Dream / Lie to Me / Chocolate Jesus / Down in the Hole / God's Away on Business / Time

Set List: Steely Dan, Clearwater, Fla. 2008

Walterbecker Steely Dan opened their 2008 tour at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Fla. on Monday before heading to New York for a six-night run at the Beacon that starts Friday and runs through June 21.  Tour ends Aug. 24 in Saratoga, Calif.
A cool part of the the first two New York shows is the presence of the great jazz pianist Bill Charlap and his trio. Donald Fagen, judging from his sound, always struck me as a Bobby Timmons or Horace Silver kind of guy - maybe the rip from "Song for My Father" on "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" was the clue - but the Dan is allowing the table to be set elegantly by having Charlap on board. His last album is a true gem.Donaldfagen_2
Steely Dan, meanwhile, treated the Clearwater folks to this set:

Royal Scam / I Got the News / Everything You Did / Show Business Kids / Two Against Nature / What a Shame About Me / Babylon Sisters / New Frontier / Hey Nineteen / Black Friday / Green Earrings / Glamour Profession /  Parker's Band / Josie / Peg / Kid Charlemagne / FM

Walter Becker's new solo album - his second - was released this week. Video is below.

Set List: Tom Petty, Grand Rapids, Mich. 2008

Tompetty08 The last time Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers toured — summer of 2006 — he had a three-pronged promotional attack: Support the new album, “Highway Companion”; celebrate 30 years of the Heartbreakers; and put enough material in the show to make it worthwhile for Stevie Nicks to tag along.
This summer, Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair and Steve Farrone are on an album-free tour that on opening night meant the jettisoning of 10 tunes that made it into most of the ’06 shows. Petty has long kept the Heartbreaker set lists compact as nearly every city gets the same show as the last; back in ’89, he was even rumored to have laminated the set list.
Petty told Rolling Stone he intends to shake up the set list a bit more on this tour, one of the band’s shortest at three months, and jam with opening act Steve Winwood on occasion. (The first two nights of the tour, though, featured the same songs). Winwood, on opening night of the tour in Grand Rapids, Mich., played cuts from his new album “Nine Lives” as well as "I'm a Man," "Gimme Some Lovin'," "Dear Mr. Fantasy," "Can't Find My Way Home" and "Higher Love."
Obscurities currently in the set are “Sweet William,” an “Echo”-era tune that was on the “Room at the Top” single; the Traveling Wilburys track “End of the Line”; the wonderful "Saving Grace" written for the film "Elizabethtown"; and two cuts from the “Wildflowers” album, “Honey Bee” and “Cabin Down Below.”
On Friday night at Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena, Petty and the Heartbreakers performed:

You Wreck Me / Mary Jane / I Won't Back Down / Even The Losers / Free Fallin' / Cabin Down Below / Sweet William / End Of The Line / The Waiting / Saving Grace / Honey Bee / Face In The Crowd / Learning To Fly / Don't Come Round Here No More / Refugee / Running Down A Dream / American Girl

Cher in Las Vegas: The Target Audience, Show Dates And, Of Course, The Set List

Cherpix_001 Here’s the deal with Cher and her  Las Vegas residency: It’s the right show for her older fans who long for the ‘60s or ‘80s, somehow acquired a copy of “Believe” and have not been interested in schlepping down tot he local arena to see her over the last decade and half. It is not a show for people who do not want to revel in nostalgia, and whose attraction to the singer is based on the flamboyance, the dance tracks and “If I Could Turn Back Time.”
Technically – and especially visually – it’s a stunner. Staging, video projections and choreography make it such a pleasing piece of eye candy. She sounds fine but she really does not sing much; you have to wonder if she is singing on “Believe” at all as it includes all the computer tweaks and has a one that's nothing like the rest of the program. For anyone who caught the Farewell Tour, the set list is nearly identical.
It is popular. Two hours before curtain, the line for cancellations was already 50 people long. (Seating is 4,296). The theater is not an easy one to get into – only four entrances and banks of slot machines where orderly lines should be – so it was tough to tell if anyone got in or if that line had grown.
Anyhow, Cher resumes her residency Aug. 6, performing Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends through Oct. 5. As currently scheduled, Cher’s tally for the year will be 50 shows.
The Variety review is here. The set list, on May 31, was:

I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For / Laverne video / Love is a Battlefield / It’s the Little Things (video) / The Beat Goes On / All Really Want to Do / Half-Breed / Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves>Dark Lady / Love to Love You Baby>I Feel Love>YMCA (band & back singers) / Don’t Leave Me This Way>Take Me Home / Sunny (video) / I Got You Babe (video) / The Way of Love / After All / Walking in Memphis / Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss) / Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I do (video) / Strong Enough / If I Could Turn Back Time / Believe

Set List: Tom Waits, New York, 1977

Anticipation of the upcoming Waits tour takes me back to October 1977. Beacon Theater. New York City. The show that got me completely hooked on Tom Waits after seeing him at a benefit in Philadelphia and at the Bottom Line the year before.
Not sure exactly what Waits played that night at the Beacon - he did open with the Dean Martin classic "Standing on the Corner " - but at My Father's Place on Long Island on Oct. 10, 1977, he played:

Aliciakeys Richard Cromelin of the L.A. Times wrote a spot-on review of Alicia Keys' concert in Orange County; I reviewed the Monday show at Staples Center, the ninth date in her 30-city tour. It appears Keys is pretty much sticking to the same set each night with only slight variations. According to my notes scribbled during the L.A. show, she played:

Ghetto Story / Waiting for Your Love / Where Do We Go From Here / You Don't Know My Name / Teenage Love Affair / Lady Marmalade (backup singers only) /  Heart Burn /   Sure Looks Good to Me / How Come You Don't Call Me / Butterflies /  Goodbye / Prelude to a Kiss / Superwoman / I Need You / Diary / Tender Love /  Unbreakable / Like You'll Never See Me Again / A Woman's Worth / Karma / The Thing About Love / Fallin'>It's a Man's, Man's Man's World / No One / If I Ain't Got You /

Set List: Eric Clapton, Tampa, Fla., 2008

Ericclapton Does Eric Clapton miss the days of Derek and the Dominos? He kicked off his U.S. tour Saturday in Tampa, Fla., with a set that leaned more heavily on "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" than any other album in his storied career.
Some of it might owe to his band  - Doyle Bramhall II on guitar, Chris Stainton on keyboards and Pino Palladino on bass - as well as the spirit of the opening act, Robert Randolph and the Family Band.
At the Ford Amphitheater on May 3, Clapton played:
Tell The Truth /  Key To The Highway / Hoochie Coochie Man / Little Wing /  Double Trouble /  Don't Knock My Love / Outside Woman Blues / Nobody Knows You / Rockin' Chair / Motherless Child /  Traveling Riverside Blues / Running On Faith / Motherless Children /  Little Queen of Spades / Before You Accuse Me / Wonderful Tonight / Layla /  Cocaine /  Crossroads (with Robert Randolph)

Billy Joel's Biggest Hit Gets An Expanded Push To Celebrate Its 30th Anniversary

Stranger Bagging on Billy Joel used to be a fun sport and I practiced it as much as the next guy in the 1970s. All these years later I still don't understand the appeal of the music or the persona.
Legacy, the catalog division of Sony, differs in their opinion, believing you can never have enough of "The Stranger," the album that instantly put "Just the Way You Are" into the wedding band canon 30 years ago and made us jokesters wonder if "she" is not "always a woman," what gender is she. Album sold more than 10 million copies, but only reached No. 2 on the album chart.
There will be two packages of "The Stranger - 30th Anniversary" released on July 8. One is two CDs; the also includes a DVD of Joel's appearances on the U.K.'s "Old Grey Whistle Test" and a 48-page booklet.
Both editions will include a CD of a previously unreleased concert featuring Joel and his band at Carnegie Hall on June 3, 1977. Bonus package includes a DVD with two live promotional videos from "The Stranger" and his 60 minute 1978 appearance on the BBC2's "Old Grey Whistle Test."
Set list from the Carnegie Hall show:
Intro /  Miami 2017 (Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway)
/ Prelude>Angry Young Man / New York State Of Mind / Just The Way You Are / She's Got A Way / The Entertainer / Scenes From An Italian Restaurant / Captain Jack / I've Loved These Days / Say Goodbye To Hollywood / Souvenir
A decade later, Joel was the first American allowed to perform in Russia. At Olympic Stadium in Moscow on July 27, 1987, he performed:
Prelude>Angry Young Man / Honesty / The Ballad Of Billy The Kid / She's Always A Woman /  Scenes From An Italian Restaurant / Allentown / Goodnight Saigon / Stiletto / Big Man On Mulberry Street / Baby Grand / An Innocent Man / The Longest Time

None of the early Mudcrutch tunes, which include "Don't Do Me Like That," made it into Monday's set.Mudcalbum

Coachella Day Two: Prince

Cochella_prince_2“Coachella! I am here!” So began the 2-hour closing set of the second day of Coachella. This speaker was, of course, Prince. The rock icon was a late addition to the lineup and many are crediting the addition with lifting a mediocre lineup to something more in-line with previous editions’ headliners. And rumor has it, the artist is taking home a paycheck well into the seven figures. Whatever the case, Prince came to party, and party he did. If Coachella had a roof, it would’ve been blown clean off.

It started out strangely, as Prince used his chance to headline a massive event by bringing out some old friends to perform. Morris Day (of the newly reunited The Time) and his sidekick Jerome played two Prince-penned ‘80s hits and offered some “Purple Rain” schtick while Prince playfully hid behind some amps. Former Prince protégé Sheila E. then took to the drums for her hit song “The Glamorous Life” (also a Prince composition) and a short solo. The band consisted of mostly new faces (some of whom played with him at his 2007 shows), including a five-piece horn section and three female backup singers. No Maceo Parker or Wendy and Lisa. Up to this point in the show, the crowd seemed confused, even a little agitated with the supporting role that Prince was playing.

Any fears of a phoned-in performance were allayed as soon as the opening bars to “1999” were heard. Starting with that classic tune, the diminutive pop star burned through a dozen songs, mostly sticking to the hits and all but ignoring his post-millennial work. There were some surprises too, including two leftfield cover choices. For months before the Coachella lineup was solidified, rumors were rampant that Radiohead would play. They aren’t, of course, but in a nod to Tom Yorke and co., Prince did a faithful rendition of the U.K. band’s first hit, “Creep.” Covers of pop songs have never been Prince’s strong suit (he’s covered, among others, Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne and Led Zeppelin), but “Creep” was suitably royal in this version. Later, worked as a medley with “7,” Prince tackled another sacred rock text -- the Beatles’ “Come Together” (there were many a Beatles cover this weekend).

Never completely comfortable with hip-hop (remember Tony M.?), Prince performed an awkward rap about the evils of corporate record companies during an extended take on “Musicology.” He didn't play any of his custom made guitars, opting instead for a pair of worn Telecasters and two slightly newer-looking Strats.

The 1 a.m. encore included two familiar standbys: "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy." He left the starstruck crowd with this: "From now on, this is PRINCE'S HOUSE!" No arguments there. Coachella may never be the same.

Prince's complete Coachella Set List:

The Bird (performed by Morris Day) / Jungle Love (performed by Morris Day) /  Glamorous Life (performed by Sheila E.) / Instrumental Jam / 1999 / I Feel For U / Controversy (with snippet of “Housequake”) / Little Red Corvette / Musicology / Cream / U Got the Look / Shh / Anotherloverholeinyourhead / Creep (Radiohead cover) / The Arms of an Angel (Sarah McLachlan cover performed by backup singers) / 7 --> Come Together (Beatles Cover) / Purple Rain / Let's Go Crazy

Coachella Day One: The Raconteurs

Raconteurs2_2 Every record executive in the world should want an artist like Jack White on their label. Whether with the White Stripes or the Raconteurs, White is a fiery, passionate and inventive performer, approaching a show with a life or death commitment. He's the type who makes audiences believe in rock 'n' roll and there just are not enough of his type around anymore.
The Raconteurs demonstrated how to command a large stage with nothing more than performance and material; its was gritty and intense, paced impeccably and balanced between nuanced hard rock and modern extensions of the blues. It was a set that should be remembered for years.

The Raconteurs' set list (or so my notes say):
Consoler of the Lonely / You Don't Understand me / Top Yourself / Old Enough / Yellow Sun / Blue Veins / Level / Attention / Hands / Many Shades of Black / Salute Your Solution / Steady as She Goes / Rich Kid Blues / Carolina Drama

Set List: Van Morrison, San Francisco, 1974

Vanmorrison In honor of Van Morrison securing his first top 10 album, we look back to a prime period for the Belfast Cowboy on the concert stage. Band had Jack Schroer on sax and David Hayes playing bass; "It's Too Late to Stop Now" had quickly earned a place as one of the greatest live albums ever; and  Morrison, then and now, rock 'n' roll's finest singer, was insisting he was a jazz singer and his current release, "hard Nose the Highway," was proof. Thankfully he did not stick to his guns on that last one.
At Winterland on Feb. 2, 1974, Morrison played:
Ballerina / Streets of Arklow / Just Liek a Woman / Try for Sleep / Into the Mystic / I Just Want to Make Love to You / Moondance /These Dreams of You / Listen to the Lion / Wonderful Remark / Warm Love / Help Me / Here Comes the Night / Gloria / Caravan>You Don't Pull No Punches / Cyprus Avenue

During the Q&A portion of a shoot for a Yahoo! video concert,  Adam Duritz shared his fondness for Miles Davis, Rhino's 1970s punk box set "No Thanks!" and the string arrangements Vince Mendoza wrote for their performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He actually joked around a bit as well.
Band is out promoting new album "Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings," for which All Music Guide is giving a thorough explanation in its enthusiastic review.
Counting Crows will be at the L.A. Apple Store Thursday; perform in Europe from late May to early July and then start a tour with Maroon 5 on July 25 in Virginia. Monday's Nissan Live Sets concert can be seen here beginning April 15.

Set List: Van Morrison, Austin, Texas 2008

The day before Van Morrison was to make his first-ever appearance at SXSW, he delivered a set heavy on tracks from his album due April 1 from Lost Highway, “Keep It Simple.” Some might argue – and I am sure plenty of car discussions on the way home involved this – that a concert with prices of $250 and $150 for orchestra seats deserved a heavy dose of the familiar.
Not so with VanMo. The Belfast Cowboy delivered seven or eight tunes from “Keep It Simple” in his encore-free show March 11 at the Austin Music Hall and beyond “Moondance” and “Bright Side of the Road,” Morrison stuck with tracks from his recent country and jazz discs. He did however, play more alto sax than usual and his voice was spot on.
The set:

This Love of Mine / Can You Dig It / Playhouse / Magic Time / Moondance / I Can’t Stop Loving You / How Can  Poor Boy / That’s Entrainment / Keep It Simple / School of Hard Knocks / No Thing / Professional Jealousy / Don’t Go to Nightclubs Anymore / End of the Land / Bright Side of the Road / St. James Infirmary / Behind the Ritual

Set List: Los Lobos, Boston, 1984

Loslobos Preparing for Los Lobos's performance at UCLA's Royce Hall Friday - split down the middle between acoustic and electric - sent me venturing down memory lane to a time when I had no money, no children and an insatiable appetite for their EP "...And a Time to Dance." Must have played that thing a few times each day for three months, struck by the energy, innocence and simplicity. It has stood the test of time.
First time I caught the band was July 12, 1984 at the Rat in Boston. They played:
I Got to Let You Know / Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio / Our Last Night / Come On Let's Go / We're Gonna Rock / Let's Say Goodnight / Los Ojos de Pancha / How Much Can I Do? / Soul Twist / A Matter of Time / Evangeline / My Little Suzie / Walking Song / Volver, Volver / Anselma / I Got Loaded / Farmer John / Don't Worry Baby / Buzz Buzz Buzz / 300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy>Whatever Shape Your Stomach’s In jam>La Bamba / Why Do You Do? / Sleep Walk / Serenata Norteña / I'm Gonna Be a Wheel Someday

Set List: Garth Brooks, Los Angeles, 2008

Garthrbooks1_sm_e Garth Brooks started his first of five shows in two days at L.A.'s Staples Center right on time for CBS's live broadcast to all but the West Coast. Raising money for firefighters, Brooks did 12 tunes in the first hour - we were led to believe "Two of a Kind" and "Beaches of Cheyenne" were not aired - and then another 30 minutes before closing out with a 30 minute encore that included his performance, solo, of songs written by his heroes.
Going in to the show, Brooks had already raised $5 million for the firefighters' fund.
Brooks performed at the 6 p.m. show  on Jan. 25:

The Thunder Rolls / Callin' Baton Rouge / Rodeo / More Than a Memory / We Shall Be Free / Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House / Beaches of Cheyenne / Papa Loved Mama / In Another's Eyes (with Trisha Yearwood)  / Two Pina Coladas / Workin For a Livin' (with Huey Lewis)  /Friends in Low Places / Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old) / The River / The Fever / That Summer / The Dance / Ain't Goin' Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up)  / Unanswered Prayers / Medley: Fire & Rain>Amarillo by Morning>Ten Feet Away>Night Moves>Piano Man>American Pie

On Saturday he did the most of the same songs, using "Chase" instead of "Workin' For a Livin'" and "Mama Tried" and two Jim Croce tunes instead of the medley that ended with "American Pie." The order, though, was more to his liking and made for a better concert.

Still salivating over the possibility of a Kinks reunion, let's rewind the clock 30 years to a San Francisco show held right after the release of their first album for Arista, "Sleepwaker," and just a  few months before Ray Davies announced his retirement - for the second time.
On Feb. 19, 1977 at Winterland, the Kinks (Ray & Dave Davies, Andy Pyle, John Gosling, Mick Avory, Nick Newell) played:
One of the Survivors / Sleepwalker / Rush Hour Blues / You Make It All Worthwhile / Banana Boat Song / A Well Respected Man / Sunny Afternoon / Waterloo Sunset / Celluloid Heroes / Schooldays /The Hard Way / Education / Brother / Stormy Sky / Life Goes On / Full Moon / Lola / Alcohol / You Really Got Me / All Day and All of the Night / Life on the Road / Victoria

Neil Young's New York Journey Takes Him Back to High School

Neilyoungny Four nights into Neil Young's New York City run at the United Palace and he appears to be sticking to the same basic set list he has used on most of the tour, save for a few surprises each night.
He pulled out his biggest curio Sunday when he performed "The Sultan," a local hit by his Canadian high school band the Squires.
Rather than obscurities, each night has seen an old hit or two make the set list: "Old Man" and "Heart Of Gold" were performed on night one,"Cowgirl In The Sand" and "After The Gold Rush" on night two, and "Don't Let It Bring You Down" on night four. "Cortez the Killer" has cropped up as well.
According to the website Sugar Mountain, Young performed a tune called "Try," a song so obscure it doesn't even appear on one of the most in-depth Young song lists.
Young closes out his run at the United Palace tonight (Tuesday) and Wednesday.

Set List: Led Zeppelin, London, 2007

Ledzeppelin At Led Zeppelin's first reunion gig in 27 years, Robert Plant dedicated "Whole Lotta Love" to Ahmet Ertegun, noted that "Trampled Under Foot" was his Jimmy Page's attempt to sound like Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues" and provided no clues as to whether Led Zep will take the stage again, like on a  tour of the States.
Variety's Steve Clarke reports that Led Zeppelin, with Jason Bonham on drums, performed the following Monday at London's O2 Arena:

Good Times Bad Times / Ramble On / Black Dog / In My Time Of Dying / Your Life / Trampled Under Foot / Nobody's Fault But Mine / No Quarter / Since I've Been Loving yOu / Dazed and Confused / Stairway to Heaven / The Song Remains the Same / Misty Mountain Hop / Kashmir / Whole Lotta Love / Rock and Roll

Set List: Amy Winehouse, Minneapolis, 2007

Amy In honor of Amy Winehouse nabbing six Grammy nominations, we will return to the days before she was married, when she didn't appear to have any scars and when she wasn't afraid to take the stage and let it rip for 45 minutes or an hour. At SXSW she was a hot and ferocious presence, tough as nails and yet so very gentle. That spring tour was mostly shows like the one she did on May 2 in Minneapolis at the Varsity Theater where she played:
Addicted / Just Friends / Cherry / Back to Black / Wake Up Alone / Tears Dry on Their Own / He Can Only Hold Her / Fuck Me Pumps / You Know I’m No Good / Me and Mr. Jones
/ Rehab / Love Is a Losing Game / Valerie
