Web Premiere For Dennis Wilson Docu

Dennis Billy Hinsche - the Billy of Dino, Desi & Billy for all of you 16 magazine readers in the 1960s - has produced and directed a documentary on the late Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson that will premiere Nov. 5 on Flasher.com.
"Dennis Wilson Forever," which is 80 minutes long, will be show in sections over the two weeks following Nov. 5. If Brian were the brains of the band, Dennis was the spirit - the one surfer in the group, the one who beleieved they should not fade into an oldies act in the 70s and the one who made a fabulous solo album. Of course, there's also that Manson connection and the fact that his mother forced Brian to include him in the band that have clouded his reputation. His legend has only grown since his death 25 years ago. I always thought it was cool that one of the best records of the 1980s, the Del Lords' "Frontier Days," was dedicated to his memory.
Hinsche is selling copies of the doc on DVD on his website.

They Don't Jam Like They Used To: 31 Minutes of 'The City'

Ma The Mark-Almond Band, led by a couple of guys who played in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers on the landmark "Turning Point" album, had one of those underground FM single hits, "The City." It was one of those wild fusiony blends of jazz and folk and prog-rock that some of us couldn't get enough of, back in the early '70s. In a 1978 Philly concert, they fused it with a snippet of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" - and then played the song for half an hour. 30 minutes. One song. Lotsa flute. Wolfgang's Vault has the evidence.

40 Years Ago Today: Coltrane Died at Age 40

Coltrane_john Today - July 17, 2007 - marks the 40th anniversary of the death of John Coltrane. The tenor saxophonist who affected jazz on a level parallel to the effect the Beatles had on pop music, his legacy continues to grows for a handful of reasons. No 1: Listeners finally get it. It has taken box sets, tribute concerts, McCoy Tyner's testifying and arrangements for big bands for it all to set in - the passion this man transferred from his lips and lungs into sound remains untouched - there was no one better before and no one has come close to touching his legacy since. And for novices, the simple way to assess his music is in chronological order; it all becomes crystal clear if one hears "A Love Supreme" later rather than sooner.
Clearly he was the last giant figure in the music's history: no jazz players have approached his depth as a composer, innovator and performer. The most recent raiding of the vaults has produced "My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport," a 1965 concert that was released two weeks ago.
A roundup of today's Coltrane offerings on the Web: Bret Primack has a documentary on the relationship between Coltrane and Sonny Rollins; Newsday has a piece on Coltrane's New York home and a classic video; one 1965 performance of "Naima" is on YouTube; and details are set for the 30th John Coltrane Memorial Concert, which will take place in September in Boston. Sadly, JohnColtrane.com has not been updated for some time.
P.S. It was the critic Ira Gitler who coined the phrase "Sheets of Sound" to describe Trane's style. he came up with the term in late 1958 after Coltrane had left Miles Davis band and was about to embark on of the greatest journeys in the history of American music.

Kelly Clarkson Spreads the Love in Private Show

Kelly It is possible Kelly Clarkson's lengthiest performance of the year will be the one she gave for Yahoo Music in mid-June. By the time it was taped, she had fired her manager, canceled her tour and started her public feud with her label's management - but her third album, "My December," had not been released. On that night, she was in good spirits, answered fans' questions and played a fair amount of the material from "My December." In that intimate setting, Clarkson exhibited a winning persona and delivered her music with a hearty enthusiaism.
