When actors direct, and other behind-the-camera tales

Hamm direct
"When TV actors go behind the camera, they're not doing it to win an Emmy," writes Thomas J. McLean in the kickoff piece to the Variety Road to the Emmys: The Director section, and he has the stats to back it up.  No actors have been nommed for a directing Emmy since 2001. Still, that leaves other rewards for such moonlighting directors as Jon Hamm (above).

Elsewhere in the section:

-- A selection of TV directors talk about their experiences in trying to build their careers.

-- How reality-competition directors and documentary directors make for strange bedfellows in the Emmy category that throws them together.

-- Interviews with top minis-and-movies helmers about how they overcame the greatest challenges in their Emmy-contending projects.

About

Christy GroszA native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
