-- Helen Mirren will receive the European Film Academy's award for European Achievement in World Cinema on Dec. 1 in Malta.
-- "Beasts of the Southern Wild" director and potential Oscar nominee Benh Zeitlin has a new, Louisiana-set project in the works, according to Stacey Plaisance of The Associated Press.
-- The 12th annual Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) New Writers Awards ceremony will take place tonight at the Japanese American National Museum on East 1st Street in Los Angeles.
-- Multiple Emmy-winner "Cheers" is the subject of an oral history by Brian Raftery at GQ.
-- A 60th anniversary screening of Charlie Chaplin's "Limelight" will be held by the film academy on Wednesday at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
-- Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel will emcee the 2012 Media Access Awards, celebrating "individuals in the entertainment and broadcast industries for their efforts in promoting awareness of the disability experience," at the Beverly Hilton on Oct. 10. Honorees include:

-- Betty White will receive two prestigious awards – the National Humanitarian Medal and the Legacy Award – at the 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards on Oct. 6th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
