Lincoln and Lina

Daniel Day-Lewis' gravitas-free voice was one of two primary things I noticed from the "Lincoln" trailer that premiered last week. While it's responsible to acknowledge that the high-pitched voice is realistic, as top Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer does, the question remains whether the realism still won't take audience members out of the movie. I mean, it didn't exactly work for Lina Lamont. 

Having exaggerated to make that point (and clearly, as you can see below, Jimmy Fallon wondered the same thing), I'll come right back and say that I expect audiences will get over the voice issue easily enough. I still find something a bit unnerving about the trailer itself, however – something that hints that the movie might simply be Ken Burns' "The Civil War" in scripted form. But being on guard heading into a movie is potentially a better scenario than having expectations be too inflated.
