After finally seeing "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," which has been included in several awards conversations – in no small thanks to the bonafides of its cast – I got to thinking what the ensemble might look like if the film is remade in 25 years. (Hypothetically, you know – though I might try to lock up those rights.)
So I put my casting hat on and came up with this:
2012: Judi Dench
2032: Kate Winslet
Thoughts: Winslet would be the youngest member of the hotel guests, but I think that will add some additional poignancy to her widow's tale.
2012: Tom Wilkinson
2032: Kenneth Brannagh
Thoughts: Brannagh would just slide right into this role, I believe.
2012: Maggie Smith
2032: Tilda Swinton
Thoughts: Swinton has the cachet needed to pull off this initially unlikable character.
2012: Bill Nighy
2032: Hugh Grant
Thoughts: This was the first one I came up with. Grant will be relatively older, but still feels like a natural and fits into the film's "Love, Actually"-for-the-next-generation vibe.
2012: Penelope Wilton
2032: Elizabeth McGovern
Thoughts: Felt right to keep this one in the "Downton Abbey" family.
2012: Ronald Pickup
2032: Hugh Laurie
Thoughts: Laurie is plenty capable of having the proper spring in his step mixed with loneliness.
2012: Celia Imrie
2032: Cate Blanchett
Thoughts: Blanchett was initially considered to play Mrs. Donnelly, but after this part was beefed up in rewrite, she consented to switch.
