Congratulations, Jodie Fos -- hey, look, it's Kristen Stewart
By design, Jodie Foster wasn't present at the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s small morning press conference announcing her as the recipient of the Cecil B. Demille Award for lifetime impact in entertainment. Still, you almost imagine that had she been there, she still might have been overshadowed by the press frenzy that greeted Kristen Stewart, who joined Simon Baker in revealing the news Thursday at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Stewart, for her part, cited her "Panic Room" mom (below — was that really 10 years ago?) as a major role model and influence.
Foster, who turns 50 this month, is the youngest recipient of the honor since Charlton Heston in 1967, and only "From Here to Eternity" producer Buddy Adler (1958) and Judy Garland (1962) were younger upon earning the award.
Foster is also the first female recipient since Barbra Streisand in 2000. Joined by HFPA prexy Aida Takla-O'Reilly (left, introducing Stewart and Baker) and ceremony hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on Jan. 13, Foster will be in fine femme fettle.
A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
