'Eye of the Storm' tries to become eye of the storm
A late-season awards campaign is being formed for little-noticed "The Eye of the Storm" and thesps Geoffrey Rush (lead actor), Judy Davis (lead actress) and Charlotte Rampling (supporting actress). Fred Schepisi ("Roxanne") directed. The Australian film was at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, then opened theatrically in the U.S. a year later on Sept. 7. and had grossed $84,000 through last weekend.
"Technical deficiencies and an ill-structured script fail to do justice to Patrick White's densely textured novel," wrote Russell Edwards last year in his Variety review. "As siblings trying to stitch up their financial legacy, Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis bookend a cast consisting of some of Oz's finest thesps, but Schepisi never gets a grip on a script with awkward literary tics."
A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
