Helen Hunt will receive the Spotlight Award from the Palm Springs International Film Festival at its awards gala Jan. 5.
“Few can claim the artistic distinctions of Helen Hunt,” said fest chairman Harold Matzner. “A consummate actress, director, producer and screenwriter, Hunt's talents are myriad.
"In her latest film, The Sessions, Hunt gives a bravura performance as a therapist with a most delicate task, to help a man who has spent his life in an iron lung achieve a most unusual wish — lose his virginity. Because of her sensitivity and grace in this performance, and to recognize a career of continuing achievement, the Palm Springs International Film Festival is proud to present the Spotlight Award to Helen Hunt.”
Past recipients of the Spotlight Award include Amy Adams and Jessica Chastain, each of whom then received Oscar noms that year.
The Palm Springs fest runs from Jan. 3-14.

A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
