The other 'Girl' enters awards fray

GirlBNot to be confused with HBO's "The Girl" — but good luck with that — David Riker feature film "The Girl" is making an awards qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles beginning Dec. 14, before its wide release in March. Brainstorm Media is distributing.

This "Girl" intends to campaign in categories including picture, director, original screenplay (also by Riker), lead actress (Abbie Cornish) and supporting actor (Will Patton). Here's the logline:

Struggling with the loss of her child to Social Services, a single mother is trapped in the quicksand of her south Texas life, unwilling to accept the consequences of her actions. When her past collides with a young child from Mexico, she begins a journey that will change her life -- teaching her that she is the architect of her own fate and learning what it is that truly defines home.

About

Christy GroszA native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
