What's up, docs?
The Oscar feature documentary category is a never-ending source of consideration and contemplation — and if only we were talking about the docs themselves. But it's those evolving rules for competing and voting that are a wonder.
The latest examination of the category in Variety comes from Addie Morfoot, who also offers a peek at some of the key candidates for awards (such as "The Gatekeepers," above) and also the huge influence of women upon the genre.

A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
