'Argo' zones in on Nevada, Oklahoma

Via In Contention, here are the results from the Nevada Film Critics Society and the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle, both of which named "Argo" top picture of the year.

Nevada

The Silver State went for "Argo" but split the director award between the film's Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow of "Zero Dark Thirty." A similar trick was pulled with "The Sessions," which won top actor for John Hawkes and earned half a lead actress prize for Helen Hunt, who shared with Jennifer Larences of "Silver Linings Playbook." Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones of "Lincoln" took the supporting acting prizes.

"Life of Pi" was tops in cinematography and visual effects, while "Les Miserables" won for production design. "Frankenweenie" was selected best animated movie.

Oklahoma

The Sooner State went whole hog for Affleck and for Chris Terrio's adapted screenplay. Acting nods went to four other movies, via Daniel Day-Lewis, Jessica Chastain, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anne Hathaway. (Day-Lewis and Hathaway were also recognized in the unconventional Women Film Critics Circle honors.)

Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola ("Moonrise Kingdom") won in original screenplay. Honors in animation, doc and foreign went to "Wreck-It Ralph," "Searching for Sugar Man" and "Amour."

Over at David Poland's blog at Movie City News, the critics groups winners are laid out in fun, geographic style. You tell me what the pattern is.

About

Christy GroszA native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
