'The Master' on a bit of a roll after Toronto win

Well, it's almost 3 a.m. here at Vote Central, and I've just put my youngest back in bed after a middle-of-the-night wakeup call. No better time than now to pass along Jennie Punter's report on the Toronto Film Critics Assn. Awards, in (for? on? via?) which "The Master" won top picture, director, screenplay and supporting actor for Philip Seymour Hoffman.

... At a vote held on Sunday, the 45-member org named Denis Lavant best actor for his spin in Leos Carax's "Holy Motors," and Rachel Weisz best actress for her turn in Terence Davies' "The Deep Blue Sea."

Gina Gershon won best supporting actress for William Friedkin's "Killer Joe."

Michael Haneke's "Amour" took best foreign-language film, while Chris Butler and Sam Fell's "ParaNorman" nabbed best animated feature. ...

Runners-up for best picture were "Amour" and "Zero Dark Thirty." The rest can be found here.

"The Master" has won three critics prizes in the past three days and is essentially a top-five movie in the 2012-13 kudos to date. That won't necessarily translate into an Oscar nomination, but the pockets of passionate support are certainly a better sign than the alternative. It could be the comeback story of the awards season.
