'Zero' follows New York triumph with NBR glory
"Zero Dark Thirty" took picture and director honors from the National Board of Review, matching its wins in the same categories from the New York Film Critics Circle on Monday.
However, "Silver Linings Playbook" snagged adapted screenplay kudos for David O. Russsell and — in something of a surprise — a lead actor prize for Bradley Cooper. Among others, Cooper edged out Daniel Day-Lewis of "Lincoln," which was shut out by the NBR except for a mention on its top 10 list.
Other interesting choices by the NBR were original screenplay for Rian Johnson’s “Looper” and supporting actress to Ann Dowd of “Compliance.”
A year ago, the NBR gave top awards to "Hugo" and Martin Scorsese for film and director, along with thesps George Clooney and Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants"), Tilda Swinton ("We Need to Talk About Kevin") and Christopher Plummer ("Beginners"). The most recent Oscar best picture winner that was also tapped by the NBR was "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2008.
A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
