'Argo' wins Producers Guild feature film award
There it is -- true suspense heading into the Oscars. The PGA winner, "Argo," will head into the Academy Awards without an Oscar nomination for director, following in the footsteps of "Little Miss Sunshine," "Moulin Rouge," "Apollo 13" and the last one to win best picture without that director nom, "Driving Miss Daisy."
It might be better to have the PGA win than the Oscar directing nom, but either way, we're sure to have doubt going into the final bell Feb. 24 – especially if "Argo" comes away empty-handed at Sunday's SAG Awards.
In fact, "Apollo 13" and "Little Miss Sunshine" won PGA and SAG ensemble honors before losing Oscar best picture.
Remember: The past five PGA feature film winners have gone on to win Oscar's grand prize. However, that was preceded by a three-year streak in which the PGA picked "The Aviator," "Brokeback Mountain" and "Little Miss Sunshine."
"Searching for Sugar Man," "Wreck-It Ralph," "Homeland," "Modern Family," "The Amazing Race" and "The Colbert Report" were among the other projects winning PGA honors.

A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.

I think that if Ben Affleck looses the DGA to Steven Spielberg, we'll have a tough fight. Lincoln is the greatest movie of the year, and academy knows how to recognize that, a victory at the SAG or DGA would make Argo shake. Anyway, I think Argo is Little Miss Sunshine once again. It's going to win the BAFTA, possibly the SAG, it does not have a nomination for Best Director, and there is behind it a movie from a legendary filmmaker. I hope Lincoln wins, because it so much better and big than Argo.
