Sundance hands out its prizes
Variety critics Justin Chang and Peter Debruge are covering the Sundance Film Festival kudofest.
Update: From Chang's postgame report:
In another dual win, "Blood Brother," Steve Hoover's study of an American's work on behalf of an AIDS-afflicted community in India, took both the grand jury prize and the audience award for U.S. documentaries.
This marks the first time that the grand jury prize and the audience award have gone to the same film in both the dramatic and documentary competitions since 2006, when "Quinceanera" and docu "God Grew Tired of Us" led their respective fields. In 2009, "Precious" (then titled "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire") won both top prizes in the dramatic competition.
Lake Bell took the Waldo Salt screenwriting prize for her writing-directing debut, "In a World ... "

A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
