So yeah, 'Argo,' but also, viva Riva
Every other candidate for best picture but "Argo" is a deer in the headlights at this point.
The Ben Affleck pic kept on winning awards this weekend – BAFTA prizes for picture, directing and editing, USC Scripter honors for writing. Even the "But what about all the Oscar nominations" theory on behalf of "Lincoln" took a hit in London – the Spielberg film cashed in only one of its BAFTA-high 10 nominations, for Daniel Day-Lewis.
AMPAS could still go its own way, but given its level of crossover with the DGA, PGA, SAG and BAFTA, among others, that's growing exceedingly improbable. But hey, it ain't over until Fat Oscar sings.
A better place to look for intrigue might be the lead actress race, where Emmaunelle Riva's BAFTA victory marks the biggest hit Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain have taken in some time. (Riva's previous nomination for a BAFTA came in 1961 for "Hiroshima, mon amour.") The fact that this is likely to be Riva's last go-round at the Oscars could be a factor if enough people think that way. Or not.
And there's still the question of who will win the most Oscars? Even at BAFTA, it wasn't "Argo" but "Les Miserables" that led the way with four.

A native of Los Angeles raised by two parents and "Hill Street Blues," Jon Weisman ankled his scriptwriting career and began working for Variety in 2004, subsequently serving as associate editor of features and television reporter before becoming awards editor. He promises not to use this platform to retroactively campaign for Oscars for “The Misfits,” though he’d feel justified in doing so.
